Dennis Mills and four companions braved 30 degree wind chill on the Country Club course. Mills removed a shoe to chip through thin ice, then sank a clutch putt for a five as rivals groused about the stakes, coffee, and a sandwich.
The forecast calls for a generally fair period with warmer temperatures through Wednesday. Lows tonight 30 to 35, highs tomorrow 65 to 70, light to moderate south and southwest winds may cause blowing dust in southwest and central areas. Temperature trends hover near normal with cooler readings following later in the week.
Chamber of Commerce directors vote to recommend a citywide ordinance regulating certain types of merchandise liquidation sales and auctions. The plan mirrors Wichita regulations since 1932, with licensing limits of one sale per 12 months and a maximum 90 day duration, and penalties for violations. The Rev. William West urged public attendance at a Community Council meeting at the Memorial Building tonight.
Harold C. John 22 formerly of Chanute died after a car crash on Kansas Highway 96 when his belt allegedly failed to protect him. Bert Learned 73 of Augusta died shortly after admission. Asa Frank Goad 68, driver of the other car, was injured. John’s funeral is planned at Wilson Johnson chapel with burial in Shaw Cemetery.
State accident records show four deaths in the last 24 hours and 117 to date in 1955, versus 119 for the same period in 1954. One death from a previously unreported earlier accident is noted. Call 17 for the Tribune if you miss delivery.
County agricultural agent Mahlon Morley reports crop damage from last week’s hard freeze. Oats show some loss and wheat and barley are retarded. Much fruit appears nipped in the bud. Spring seeded clover and alfalfa also affected. final extent awaits sunshine.
Parson s Kansas Freeto Construction Co Pittsburg was apparent low bidder on three of five highway projects opened by the State Highway Commission. Bids include 391 309 for a large project on U S 160 with street widening a new Labette Creek bridge and a Labette levee. Another bid 34 822 covers a 205 foot bridge near Pittsburg and widening K57 toward U S 69. Harry Henery Ottawa bid 47 774 for 3 8 miles of road surfacing near the Kansas ordnance plant in Labette County.
Ralph Dwyer of the Salvation Army conducts the annual Chanute fund drive with a local quota of 1000 dollars. The two week campaign moves next to Erie to cover the county effort totaling 6210.60 dollars. Dean Foster chairs the Chanute Service Unit. contributions may be mailed to L. S. Wilson at the First National Bank.
The National Assembly convicted impeached President Jose Ramon Guizado as an accessory in the assassination of his predecessor Jose Antonio Remon. He was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison.
Arthur Augustus Hensch, 52, of Wichita, died yesterday from injuries suffered in an automobile crash near Bentley, Kansas, on March 12.
About 35 girls from Vilas Hum boldt Altoona and Benedict are expected for the annual Girls Athletic Assn Play Day at Senior High School from 9 30 a m to 2 30 p m. Some 40 Chanute girls will join the visitors in events with morning basketball aerial darts deck tennis stunts tumbling relays and dodge ball followed by lunch and a program by Junior College students led by Dean Harris. Afternoon events include folk dancing team stunts and a posture contest with ribbons for placing in team events and in the posture contest.
Mrs B J Truster of 1216 S Central returned from Mercy Hospital Independence after a month there and is convalescing at home.
The Kansas House failed by six votes to override Gov. Fred Hall's veto of the right to work bill. Supporters earned 78 votes while 44 sustained the veto. the measure had earlier passed the House 66-45. Democrats largely joined to uphold the governor's stance amid Republican leadership backing.
Mrs. Georgia Asper a 26 year old widow filed a $60 000 damage suit against Adolph B Spreckels II alleging indecent assault and battery while both were hospital patients at Polyclinic Hospital. The incident allegedly occurred just before midnight on December 4.

St Paul Crawnosho High hosted a choral festival with five schools including St Paul Galesburg Grant Thayer and Walnut. Guest conductor D J Cox led performances featuring choirs solos and ensembles with Cox adding two violin solos by special request.
Fifth and sixth grade instrumental music students will present a free concert in the Junior High School auditorium at 8 tonight under the direction of D. J. Cox. About 125 children from Hutton Murray Hill and Alcott schools will perform orchestra ensemble and solo numbers. Special music will be provided by private instructors Joseph Rovillo and James Mitchell.
A P A C16 plane broke from its moorings while warming up and rolled down the flight line into a jet trainer in Greenville Mississippi. A flight instructor was killed and four other airmen were injured.
Police logged three non injury traffic incidents yesterday. A city pickup driven by M I Mendenhall collided while Williams attempted to pass. Orosco cited for failure to yield after his car hit Larkey at Sixth and Central. Wilbur Allison’s rear fender was damaged when bumped in the city lot east of the Santa Fe station.
W. W. Hutton, secretary manager of the Builders Assn., warned that an early strike or shutdown of construction in greater Kansas City seems almost inevitable after stalled negotiations with AFL hoisting engineers. Contracts for engineers and many other crafts expire at midnight Thursday. Elmer Garzee of Local 101 declined comment.
Prime Minister Churchill told the House of Commons that four power talks appear brighter recently. He supports a summit conference but noted heads of government have not agreed to use that method yet.
TOPEKA The high school aid bill that Gov. Fred Hall prioritized returned to the House floor after an unpredictable vote sent it to a conference committee. Rep. Jennie Hoyt led a reconsideration of the previous concurrence with a Senate amendment, signaling a new push for a permanent financing plan amid veto-framed tensions over the right to work measure. The original House version relied on a 50 percent income tax hike to fund the aid, but the Senate replaced it with the governor's plan using the elementary fund and rescheduling replenishments from sales tax revenue.
CIO President Walter Reuther told 3,000 delegates in Cleveland that labor unions will create a large common strike fund and seek no outside aid for 1955 auto bargaining. The UAW plans a 25 million dollar stake fund to back a walkout in support of a guaranteed annual wage.
