Kansas Senate ends two months of debate with adjournment after a clash over educational television. The session approving a $25,000 study for educational TV and pushing a home rule amendment for cities, with outcome uncertain for a state network and future legislatures.
In Washington, Carlos Marcello invoked the Fifth Amendment 35 times in 15 minutes during Senate testimony, refusing to discuss his alleged Mafia ties and connections to Sheriff William Coci. The exchange focused on possible links to crime commissions and whether Marcello would answer questions after cross examination of Aaron Kohn.
The annual spring meeting of Third district newspaper editors and publishers will be in Chanute on May 16. Fred Krueger of Baxter Springs, president, announced the arrangements. The Tribune staff will handle local arrangements. A tea and program for editors wives will be at the Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis hospital and a dinner at the Tioga. An afternoon session will be at the Memorial building.
In Dodge City the school board approved raises for next term with teachers receiving a $325 bump. This comes after a $225 hike previously voted, plus the $100 annual automatic raise for returning teachers.
Police department notes a city ordinance requiring all dogs to be penned or tied. Fines range from 5 to 100 dollars. Ady. 28u-7t.
Voters flock to the polls with 638 ballots cast by 12:30 p.m. in the city primary. Turnout lagging two years ago, polls close at 6 p.m. and first results expected about 7:30 p.m. Counts include ward and precinct totals.
Lloyd Allen of Pleasant Hill Missouri pleaded guilty in city court yesterday to driving while intoxicated and was sentenced to 90 days in county jail. He was arrested Friday night by the highway patrol on US 169 south of Chanute. Two other men charged with DWI, Lawrence Head of Thayer and Lee Max Johnson of Wichita, formerly Chanute, were released on bond pending hearings. Head was charged after a Thayer traffic accident injuring a Chanute couple. He posted $150 bond for a hearing at 4 p.m. Thursday. Johnson was arrested after a complaint about his driving and had a $250 appearance bond posted with an April 2 bearing set.
A weather bulletin from Topeka warns of increasing cloudiness and mild conditions tonight with light precipitation. Wednesday brings occasional showers and cooler air with a low near 50 and a high near 60. Temperatures today expected mild statewide, tomorrow 40 to 50, with light precipitation.
The Tribune publishes its fifth annual building edition with a 12 page section on building construction and repairs. It features stories and pictures and advertisements from contractors lending agencies material suppliers and allied firms. Many in the area plan to build remodel or repair this spring and the section aims to aid planning.
Topeka AP notes Kansas traffic fatalities in the last 24 hours show 100 to date in 1959 versus 88 for the same period in 1958 as recorded by the state accident records section.
Optimistic builders and lumber men in a four county area expect a record postwar year with about two million dollars in homes, businesses, schools, churches and highway projects either under way or planned. Chanute firms report numerous new homes and remodeling, plus major water plant work and a school board building project underway.
McPherson Senior High School saw 205 of 590 students absent as an illness like the flu swept the district. The middle school reported 65 of 485 absent while elementary figures were incomplete due to the disruption.
An oil company C plane taking off in dense fog crashed in flames near a road at San Antonio International airport, killing pilot Guy Franklin Walter Jr. and injuring two other aboard, including Tom N. Davey and Charles Edgerton. The twin engined aircraft belonged to Luling Oil & Gas Co.
Ralph E. Schneider of Tulsa was identified by his wife as the car’s occupant after a crash on U S 160 three miles east of Parsons. The car burned in a gasoline tank explosion. the empty transport truck did not catch fire. Driver Richard Appelhans, 37, Carthage, Missouri, was uninjured.
The city commission approved rezoning the block bounded by Lincoln and Santa Fe from B-2 general business to B-2 residential after support from 12 property owners. The split vote had Mayor Dahlgren approving and Commissioner Williams voting no. The meeting also addressed park and street improvements, water rights inquiries, and a new beer license for the E & M cafe.
Police link a 54 Dodge station wagon theft to the escape of Harvey Standlee from a Lansing prison farm. Standlee, a 29 year old from Stockton Kansas, was captured September 20 and is back in custody for parole violation on a 5 to 10 year Cherokee County burglary sentence. The stolen car from Albert Zillner’s 309 West Sixth home disappeared between 7 20 and 7 50 a.m. Also stolen was Zillner’s purse containing about two dollars. Standlee was last seen leaving the prison farm at 10 30 a.m. yesterday. Police noted a separate 1955 Mercury with LV 5293 reported stolen in Leavenworth, but no link established.
Chanute High School students’ survey results will be presented to the Community Council in a 7:30 p.m. Memorial Building meeting. Police Chief Tom Morehead reports no complaints about the canteen this past year and the board will review results to decide continuation plans and funding.
