Washington AP reports a railroad spokesman warned of a possible wide scale rail strike but later said the crisis is averted as unions deny strike plans. Secretary Wirtz convened a meeting with railroad managers while unions were not invited.
Los Angeles area brush fires burned about 10 000 acres with 32 homes destroyed as 1 200 firefighters battled Verdugo Hills San Rafael Hills and Newhall blazes. Winds slowed but hot spots remained. thousands evacuated and oil fields near Newhall at risk. No deaths reported.
Area forecast calls for fair skies and little temperature change through Wednesday. Tonight lows mid 30s, highs Wednesday 65 to 70. In Topeka dry windy mild weather continues with prairie fire danger as humidity drops to 12 to 15 percent. Cold front stalled in northeast Kansas then expected to move back into Nebraska as a warm front. Highs today range from 50s northeast to near 65 in the southwest. Tonight lows 30 to 35. Monday highs 51 Goodland to 66 Pittsburg. morning lows 23 Hutchinson to 38 Lawrence.

George Lincoln, 114 S. Forest, an employee of Lauder Tank Co. in Emporia, was injured in a truck accident Friday. He remains in serious but not critical condition in a Wheatland Wyoming hospital, according to his sister Mrs. W A Crouch of Hartford. Lincoln suffered chemical burns from gasoline soaking him in the cab. Mrs. Lincoln and their daughter left for Wyoming after word of the crash. Myron D. Robinson, 29, of Madison, was killed in the accident.
A new Chanute informational pamphlet funded by the women's committee of the Chamber of Commerce is now available for visitors. It highlights the Safari Museum points of interest lodging cafes recreation organizations churches and general data plus a city map. Wichita report notes a skidrow deanery expanding to include beat poets drawing police scrutiny. Officers removed obscene material and ejected two teenagers from East Douglas cafe operator Moody Connell said police ordered a picture taken down and warned against selling poetry described as obscene trash. Charles Plymell, a beat poet who frequents the area, figures in the scene.
President Johnson seeks a $962.5 million anti poverty program to help youth earn their way out of poverty while Republicans warn of duplication and extra bureaucracy. Harris was unanimously re-elected chamber president for the coming year, his third term. L. Hugh Chapman was elected vice president. Jim Benton become treasurer after a 946 vote over Wayne Umbarger. Directors named include Benton, Umbarger, Chapman, Disney, and others with terms starting this year. The meeting also covered plans for the annual dinner on April 8 with Jack Lucy as speaker, and reports on street widening, parking lot proposals, and industrial growth cooperation.
In Washington the Bobby Baker inquiry session dissolved amid sharp exchanges. Senator B Everett Jordan overrode GOP objections and delayed hearings, citing Republican attacks on committee integrity. Sen Hugh Scott accused Democrats of seeking instructions from others while Sen Carl Curtis warned against a whitewash. Republicans pressed to call more witnesses, while Democrats argued only a forged tax return probe warranted action. One named witness, Joseph Fabianich, a convicted white slaver, was cited by Scott as a possible testifier regarding an alleged Baker assault on a girl.
Thousands of Irish and other revelers marched along Fifth Avenue in New York in a lively St. Patrick's Day parade. The northward procession began shortly after noon at Manhattan's 44th Street.
