Sen. Steadman Ball of Atchison, hospitalized two weeks ago with an internal disorder, has recovered and is expected to return to the legislature Wednesday. Ball, in his fourth term and chair of the Judiciary Committee, was told by his doctor the cause was riotous living in Topeka.
Multi millionaire Hunt Huntington Hartford plans to sell most of his art collection to raise cash. He denies welfare eligibility and insists he is not hard up, but says the recession has hit many wealthy people and they could use extra cash.
Three blasts struck two federal buildings in St Louis causing major damage to a federal records center. No serious injuries were reported though fourteen police and fire personnel were treated for concussions and released. A second blast hit a brick building housing ROTC facilities for St Louis and Washington universities about three hours later.
Jefferson City AP reports four Missouri colleges have sent 79 students to participate in a new Legislative Aide program during the 76th General Assembly. Students earn three hours college credit for serving as aides to a representative of their choice, with required Capitol work and self-funded expenses, though a possible grant may be arranged. Participating schools are the University of Missouri Central Methodist Mayette Westminster Fulton and Southwest Missouri State Springfield.
Two Wichita, Kansas women met Swedish Ambassador Gunnar Hagglof in Paris for thirty minutes to press Sweden to ask Hanoi for prisoner information. Representing the Forgotten Americans' Committee for Kansas, they arrived Sunday for a one week visit and were told the ambassador would request further information from the Vietnamese government.
FDIC Chairman Frank Wille told the House Banking Committee that mismanagement caused bank failures. He cited 19 closures in 26 months, four from loan or deposit irregularities and 15 from weaknesses in loan portfolio management, with losses from improper loans to officials or owners of the banks or affiliated interests as major causes.
Kansas regulates day care homes under the State Board of Health with licensing by health and welfare divisions. TOPEKA AP The Kansas House approved a congressional reapportionment bill 87 to 30 sending it to the Senate. It changes eight counties Comanche Barber Rice Washington Clay Morris Anderson and Miami to better balance districts based on the 1970 census. Comanche and Barber move from the 5th to the 1st district Rice from the 4th to the 1st and Washington and Clay from the 2nd to the 1st.
The city commission heard a proposed electric capital improvements plan in May 1971 with five notable projects including reconductor upgrades on 3rd Street, west overhead circuit improvements adding three transformers, and north south Plummer line reconductor. Costs range from 5 400 to 10 000 dollars with further 1972 73 items noted. The plan aims to meet rising demand as Chanute interchanges power with Coffeyville and to prevent overloading and water plant failures.
