McKinstry Sentenced To One Year In Jail
Robert Leon McKinstry 19 of Lake Orion Mich pleaded guilty in district court to a reduced charge of using a car without the owner's consent. He received a one year county jail term, a $500 fine plus costs, and credit for time served. The Jan 3 theft involved Elbert Goins of Earlton. The car wrecked at Osawatomie and McKinstry, who said he was hitchhiking home from Camp Hood after discharge, was arrested the same day. He had been drinking at the time.

Watchman Injured as Santa Fe Train Derails at Newton
The last three cars of an eastbound Texas Chief derailed on arrival at Newton station. The wreck collapsed the watchman tower at Main Street crossing. Watchman Martin Lepe, about 60, suffered cuts and bruises. Twenty seven passengers in the three cars were unhurt.
