Chanute Junior Chamber of Commerce members will serve as volunteer firefighters to meet insurer recommendations and prevent higher rates for local schools hospitals businesses and homes. Fire Chief C W Brennan cited needs for about 20 volunteers, training requirements, equipment upgrades, and potential insurance protection for volunteers.

Save The Quail Drive Scatters Mills Of Milo To Help Birds
Left Hand area volunteers organized Operation Save The Quail after heavy snow left quail without food around Chanute. George Edmondson and Drexel Allen oversaw distribution from Edmondson's service station as 10 740 pounds of mile grain were delivered by car and two planes, with 150 to 350 volunteers distributing sacks of five to seven pounds each. Quail were seen feeding at grain sites as thaw begins and wild birds begin to find food again.

Death Takes Roy Tyson
Roy T. Tyson, 51, of R. 1, died at 3:45 a.m. at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City Kansas. He farmed and ran Tyson Cafe for over 30 years, entered the hospital for treatment a week ago, and death cause is not listed. He was an Elk member and recent 25 year Masonic recipient. He was born August 3, 1908, married to Hazel Wiltse, and survived by wife, a daughter, his mother, a sister, a brother, and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete with Johnson Mortuary in charge.

District Court Trials by Jury For March Term Erie Chanute
Jury trials for the March term are set to start March 21 at Erie and April 11 at Erie with cases including State vs Vivian Miller for drunken driving and burglary charges for Cooley Yonkers and Edward Gale. In Chanute the term opens April 11 with additional driving while intoxicated and larceny cases. Two Erie defendants pled guilty to related charges and sentencing is scheduled for next Wednesday.

Power Failure Hits Large North Central Kansas Area
An equipment failure at a Kansas Power and Light substation east of Topeka disrupted electric service to a wide area of north central and northeast Kansas for nearly 40 minutes Tuesday. The outage affected Topeka Hiawatha Marysville Manhattan and many smaller towns in the region.

Bridge Collapse After Milk Truck Crash Near Southwest City
A milk truck broadside caused a 282 foot Elk River bridge to collapse seven miles north of Southwest City Missouri. The truck driver Howard Gere Cooper 27 of Jane Missouri suffered minor injuries after both vehicle and span plunged about 40 feet into the river. Most of the milk spilled into the water.
