Kathy J. Coulter and Larry Phil Thompson led Chanute entries in the Elks state leadership competition. Coulter earned a $200 scholarship for third place. Lassen’s Condition Is Reported as Good
Paul Lassen, brakeman for Parsons, was reported in good condition at Neo sho Memorial Hospital after suffering first and second degree burns on hands and face in a collision between a Katy train and a propane truck near Galesburg. The crash killed W. R. Arey and R. N. Arey, engineer and fireman, both Parsons men. Walter Joseph Steinbach Jr. of Lamar, Colorado, driver of the propane truck, remains in critical condition at Mercy Hospital in Parsons with burns.

One Killed Two Hurt In Slick Highway Crash

47 Cars Derailed On Freight Train
In Herkimer New York a New York Central freight train and a mail train derailed 47 cars after 32 of the freight train’s 82 cars left the tracks. A signal bridge was knocked down and no injuries were reported. The westbound mail train struck the bridge causing 15 of its 17 cars to derail.
