Cuba disclosed for the first time the arrest of an air hijacker after a National Airlines jet was forced to land in Havana. The Communist party newspaper Gramma named the suspect as Anthony Garnet Bryant and noted prior U.S. arrests for robbery and drug trafficking.
Sen James B Pearson Midwest Republican says he now opposes deploying the antiballistic missile system Sentinel, changing his stance from last year. He argues the plan is marginal and unnecessary to keep pace with the Soviet Union, citing weakened justification for a thin version.
In Provincetown Massachusetts two young women Patricia Walsh 23 a teacher and Mary Ann Wysocki 23 a Rhode Island college senior are identified as victims. A third unidentified teen was found earlier 300 yards from the site where the remains were exhumed. Antone Costa 25 was arrested in Boston on murder charges.
A new gold rush appeared to be building as belief in franc devaluation lifted demand. In Zurich gold reached a record 43.40 to 43.70 dollars per ounce amid heavy buying, while London fixing opened with a 25 cent rise to 43.25 and spiked to 43.60 as dealers reported strong orders.
Russell L. Schweickart stepped from the LEM hatch at 12 08 p m EST and floated in space with a life‑support pack. He was joined briefly by Dick McDivitt and David Scott as he tested the new suit and pack mounted to the moonwalk platform.
McDivitt ordered a 45 minute EVA only an hour before Schweickart’s exit after cancelling a longer walk due to nausea. Schweickart’s condition improved and he was cleared for a shortened walk while the more ambitious plan was scrapped and cabins depressurized to limit risk.
An explosive charge blew up in the Hebrew University cafeteria injuring several. A hand grenade was later thrown into an Israeli bank in Ramallah wounding one customer. The incidents follow a recent Jerusalem supermarket bombing that killed two and wounded nine. Security forces report breaking up a large Arab terrorist network in the West Bank. Defense Minister Dayan urged new legal and economic systems in occupied Arab areas and proposed Jews settle in cities on the West Bank including Nablus.
In Topeka Gov. Rob ert Docking indicated at a news conference he still plans to veto a Republican bill for accelerated highway construction even after House amendments. The measure would raise the gasoline tax from five to seven cents to finance up to $300 million in bonds with first cent effective July 1 and second cent Jan. 1, 1971. Docking said he would veto in its present form and noted possible amendments.

U S and allied forces report record casualties in the first week of a new Viet Cong offensive. U S claims 453 Americans killed and 2 593 wounded. Saigon tallies 521 military deaths. Civilians die as rockets hit Saigon slum. 25 killed and over 70 wounded. Satellite reports note 6 752 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong deaths among seven days of fighting.
Rescue workers drilled through 35 feet of rock in Northern Utah to reach William Buck Jones a miner trapped for nearly five days. They delivered water and planned food aid while Jones described his enclosure and aided efforts to stabilize the cave.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird warned in Saigon that continued enemy attacks on South Vietnamese cities would meet consequences and that the United States will not tolerate any escalation of the war after a rocket barrage on the capital.

The annual tuberculin skin testing program for District 413 and St Patrick’s schools occurs next week, with District 101 tests starting March 24. Eligible pupils include kindergartners first graders ninth graders high school seniors relocating students and junior college transfers. Mrs. Margaret Wood oversees the program and urges completion of permission slips.
