Fire damages truck near Erie. poultry saved
A truck belonging to Thompson Poultry Inc of Iola caught fire around 3:30 a.m. north of Erie, damaging insulation and causing $800 in damage. Neosho County Sheriff David Kern and Erie Police helped, but the Erie rural fire department extinguished the blaze with the right rear tire fire starting the incident. The load of frozen dressed chickens was saved.

A 6 year old Anthony Bernardino was trapped 27 feet down a narrow hole in a road project in El Monte California for almost seven hours. Rescue workers drilled a shaft, used a crane, and finally lifted him to safety at 12:08 a.m. He spoke to his parents and was taken to a medical center in good condition. The incident occurred while a kite outing led to the fall. The road work supports a new bus line on the San Bernardino freeway. An area forecast warned of cloudy, windy, and colder conditions with possible light snow and snow flurries late tonight into Saturday.
