Turkish Students Study Oil Industry at Mid-America Refinery

A Turkish delegation of eight men and two women, linked to Oklahoma A&M and Kansas State College, studied the American oil and agricultural sectors during a luncheon at Tioga Hotel hosted by Mid-America Refinery. Alan Goodbury of the State Department commented on U.S. democracy as the group toured the refinery and oil field laboratories.

Stevens Seeks Reelection as Neosho County Superintendent

Mrs. Nelle H. Stevens announces her candidacy for Republican reelection to Neosho County superintendent of public instruction. A county native with 30 years in school work, she has taught in Wichita Los Angeles and Chanute and serves in multiple educational and community groups. She earned a BS and is pursuing a master's while her husband died in World War II. they have a son Marion, a Cha nute senior high teacher.

Fair and cooler outlook across Kansas for Friday

Forecaster Tom Arnold warned of a 15 to 20 degree drop as a front moves in. The forecast calls for fair skies through Friday with cooler air in the west and north tonight, overnight lows 25 to 35, and Friday highs in the 50s across the state. Wichita, Chanute and Emporia reached 71 yesterday while Goodland dropped to 26 overnight.

Diver to Run for Third Term as County Commissioner

Dwight C. Diver of 929 S. Highland announced as a Republican candidate for re election as county commissioner from Neosho county's third district. The district covers about a third of the county, including Chanute south of Main Street, Tioga township south half, and all of Danville township. Diver, a stockman, is serving his third term and focuses much on county business.

February traffic accidents in Chanute reported

Seventeen accidents involving 35 drivers, six trucks and 32 cars were investigated in Chanute in February. Five drivers were female, 30 male. Two cited for defective brakes. Ages ranged across multiple brackets. Fifteen accidents occurred in daylight, two at night. A Grady community meeting is set for Tuesday at the school with Harmony community play and refreshments.

Crop Reporter Quits Over Harmful Small Farmer Effects

J D R Dennis, a 20 year crop reporter for the Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, resigns saying statistics favor large buyers and harm small farmers. He criticizes the monthly reports for enabling packers and speculators to manipulate prices and warns the system treats small farmers as gamblers during scarcity or war.

89 Year Old Twins Seek National Older Set

Paris Texas two spry 89 year old sisters Ellen Whitten and Ellen Buchanan seek an older set of twins in the United States. Born December 3 1866 they believe they hold Texas championship status but want to learn their national standing. They say washing dishes and household chores are still easy and note their mother lived to 101.

Ike's TV Radio Talk Expensive to Networks

President Eisenhower’s televised address last night cost two major networks about 150000 in canceled programs. CBS TV reported a 100000 loss from dropping the United States Steel Hour. NBC estimated 50000 lost from canceling This Is Our Life. ABC TV delayed a prize fight for half an hour to carry the address.

Kansas Turnpike Authority weighs a north south toll road through eastern Kansas to link Kansas City and Dallas. Neosho Red Cross Starts Drive With $10709 Goal

The Neosho county Red Cross fund drive begins Friday with about 400 volunteers. The county goal is 10709, of which 6289 stays locally for chapter expenses and blood collection. In Chanute Mrs Walter Poor directs the city drive with a 7500 quota. Ten other towns set quotas. Forsyth reports 12 townships organized for the push.

Traffic Toll Rises in January 1956 Deaths

In Chicago and nationwide, traffic deaths reached 2,960 in January 1956, up 140 from January 1955. The National Safety Council said it marked the eleventh consecutive monthly increase in traffic fatalities.

Seventeen Fire Runs Reported in February

Chanute's firefighters answered red alarms during February. Fire Chief C. W. Brennan reported an estimated loss of about $300 for the month, compared with $1,800 last February. Three February calls went to Tioga Township, one to Danville Township, six were grass fires, two were motor car blazes, plus incidents at an apartment building a garage an emergency call and two rescues from high places.

Concert Series Drive Progress in Community Campaign

The fifth annual Community Concert membership drive is ahead of last year with the halfway point reached yesterday. Campaign workers meet at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Evans music store, headquarters for the drive, where a membership will be awarded to one worker.
