Four Die In Gulf Oil Rig Explosion Near Morgan City
An early morning blast and fire on the twin hulled drilling ship C P Baker sank the vessel 78 miles southwest of Morgan City in 180 feet of water. At least four men were killed and 13 or more were missing. About 42 crew were aboard. 25 survivors were taken to Lakewood Hospital in Lake Charles in stable condition. The rig, owned by Reading and Bates of Morgan City, had moved to the site Monday and cost about six million dollars. Survivors described gas pockets causing the disaster as the crew slept on 12 hour shifts.

Mobil Oil's D R Wall testified that Kansas purchases are used at the Augusta plant and not tied to other states. The commission reviews June 17 start, with June level 280 000 bpd after a prior 305 000 cap, and states yield around 290 000 bpd. Schwinn said the committee unanimously voted to seek higher allowables after comparing with pro ration steps in Oklahoma and Texas. Oklahoma's current allowance is 540 000 bpd with runs over 560 000.
