Louisiana Governor Earl K Long faces a widening crisis as his wife sues for separation and seeks temporary alimony of 2500 dollars a month. He counters with claims of defamation while doctors report a nervous breakdown not mental illness.
An F100 jet from Kadena Air Base crashed into Miamori Elementary School on Okinawa killing 21 and injuring about 100. Capt. John G. Schmitt Jr. parachuted to safety as flames spread to 30 homes and nearby streets. Police and rescue teams search for more bodies amid political reactions in Tokyo.
Frank Collett born in Sicily 50 years ago will visit his homeland for six weeks this summer. He flies from Kansas City on July 8 and will land in Palermo July 9 to be met by relatives. He travels via Paris and Rome and returns to Chanute August 21 after a day of air travel. Collett arrived in the U S in 1909 and runs a shoe shining and hat cleaning shop on East Main.
Injuries and damage were slight in a one car accident two miles north of Chanute on US 169 about 11 a.m. yesterday. Nellie Mae Hubert, 64, of Tulsa, suffered a bruised hip and was released from Neosho Memorial Hospital after inspection. A flat left rear tire on her 1955 Dodge caused the skid on the curve south of Elks lake, sending the car into a culvert guard post before leaving the road.
Caledonia New York AP report says two boys on a railroad trestle were struck by a freight train while fishing with Paul Lathan on his seventh birthday. William Hayward eight, was dragged to his death as Paul fell into the creek below. Norman Lathan, the father, shouted to move but the tragedy occurred as the engine passed.
Rains of cloud burst proportions affected Kansas for a third night with heavy downpours in Herington and Kanapolis Reservoir causing flash flooding. Central and northeastern sections expected more storms today and tonight, with cooler air spreading across the state and variable temperatures from morning to evening.
Topeka AP reports state accident records show 0 fatalities in the last 24 hours ending at 9 am today. To date in 1959 fatalities total 253, compared with 228 for the comparable period in 1958.
The 22nd annual Central States Shrine Assn. convention will be held in Little Rock from September 10 to 12. Organizers expect over 24 000 Shriners and their families to attend. Quinn Glovern serves as secretary treasurer and convention director for the association covering Arkansas Oklahoma Missouri Kansas Nebraska Iowa and Colorado.
The Kansas Park and Resources Authority estimates costs for planning parks at Turtle Creek Dam near Manhattan and Pomona Reservoir near Ottawa. It will prepare plans for Cedar Bluff near Hays and Fall River near Fredonia for the next Legislature action. Kanopolis Reservoir was recently dedicated.
Carl Hutchison keeps a private 80 acre herd of 20 buffalo west of Chanute along old K39 highway. The herd began with three animals in 1932 after a sale at 101 Ranch. Bulls and cows guard their territory, yet the animals can be tame with familiar visitors.

Eight year old Brian Henderson was electrocuted in Brookfield Connecticut after his body touched a high tension wire while climbing a tree. The tragedy occurred Monday and authorities are investigating the accident.
A five week program begins July 8 at Neosho Memorial Hospital for administrators and staff of four Neosho County nursing homes. Instructor is RN Rachel Ray with support from the Kansas State Board of Health. Courses run Monday through Friday nights until 60 hours are completed, with final week in homes. Certificates mark completion, not nursing aide status.
Merle Toews of rural Earlton pleaded guilty in police court to shooting out a street light on North Kansas in the 100 block near midnight Saturday. He was fined $20 and assessed $2.50 for replacement costs. Original hearing moved up at his request. bond posted was $100.
