Two men, Earl E. Shultz and Roscoe C. Brooks, were each fined 125 dollars plus court costs after pleading guilty in police court to operating motor vehicles while intoxicated.
The Kansas Ordnance Plant near Parsons will lay off 279 workers during July and August as part of a nationwide ammunition production cutback. Lt. Col. R. A. Visco said 225 National Gypsum employees and 14 ordnance staff will depart now, with 40 more Gypsum workers in August. Some reductions come from not replacing quitting workers.
The stock market began with declines of 1 to 2 points in leadership, then trimmed losses as the session progressed. Volume remained light with about 2.2 million shares traded, following 2.25 million yesterday in a cautious market.

A petition from the Ridges Home Demonstration Unit asks the Board of County Commissioners to contract with Fort Scott Library for free use by rural families. Other units are circulating similar petitions for submission to the commissioners.
