Underground oil shale fire unlocks vast reserves in situ
The Bureau of Mines cites underground fire as a method to crack and burn oil bearing rock 70 to 90 feet deep to extract shale oil without mining. If successful, in situ retorting could cut costs on federal lands in Colorado Utah and Wyoming. A Wyoming Sweetwater site reportedly produced oil without mining.

Wheat Harvest Estimate Stands Despite Wet Weather
AP reports Kansas crop specialist J E Pallesen confirms the 298 million bushels harvest estimate for Kansas wheat remains unchanged. He notes rains hinder ripening but cool cloudy weather aids kernel filling, while overly wet conditions can cause kernels to shrivel if heads are ripe. Early harvest suggests yield is as good or better than estimated.
