Lt. Col. Robert J. Noll of Ft. McClellan Alabama faces a major challenge after winning the northeast district elimination. He entered a Chicken Cantonese recipe and secured the district title, becoming the first man to advance to the contest.
TOPEKA AP A new committee under the state health planning program met for the first time. Dr Thomas F Taylor of Salina chairs the Kansas Coordinating Council. Mrs Jessica Branson of Lawrence acts as chairwoman and subcommittees will study personal health service aspects. Plans include committees on regional organization local service delivery manpower and a health information system.
The first U S Navy ship named Kansas City slides into Fore River at Quincy General Dynamics yard with Mrs. Darby breaking a champagne bottle. Rep William J Randall delivers the christening address as the vessel nears delivery to the Navy in early 1970. The 659 foot ship will carry petroleum products and provisions as part of its mission. Two Kansans are acquitted in a mail fraud case in St Louis federal court related to Teachers Co op Inc. Frank E Stewart of Manchester and James A Zitnik of Overland Park were cleared. Carl C Marcy faced a not guilty result due to insufficient government case.
The Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service reports first wheat sample results for eight southern counties Clark Barber Comanche Harper Kingman Pratt Reno Montgomery. Average test weight 62.4 lb per bushel, down from last year. Protein 10.4%, below five year and 1968 levels. Grade defects 1.9%, below 3% limit for No. 1. About 93% of cars graded No. 1, remainder No. 2.
A head on collision on K96 about 14 miles NW of Fredonia left two 19 year olds dead. Mary Crisswell of Fall River Kansas died at the scene and Velma Ghramm of Joplin Missouri died later at a Fredonia hospital. Janet Bennett of Wichita driving the opposing car crossed the center line while passing another vehicle. Lajuanta Rimel of Wichita was treated and released.
Search teams along the Walnut River near Osage Street Bridge near Augusta continue for two Wichita men and a boy missing after a canoe overturned in rapids. William H. Morgan Jr., 35, principal of Sim Elementary, his son William Kirk Morgan, 10, and Harold R. Porter, 37, an attorney, were in the canoe. Porter's son Bruce, 11, was rescued from the water and described the overturning incident.
President Nixon announced he will name Dr Roger C Egeberg dean of USC Medical School to the nation’s health post. The move follows Education Secretary Finch giving up on getting the job for Dr John H Knowles. White House secretary Zieigler announced the decision in New York noting Finch does not plan to resign despite defeat by the AMA and Senator Dirksen.
Weather and flood bulletin from TOPEKA reports cooler Sunday with scattered storms and highs in the 70s to 80s. River crests linger along the Marais des Cygnes, with major flooding expected at Quenemo and La Cygne while Neosho and Cottonwood floods are easing behind John Redmond reservoir.
The Medical College of South Carolina hospital ended a 102 day dispute with striking Negro nonprofessional workers, while Charleston County Hospital strike remained unresolved. Pay increases to start July 1 raise state hospital starting wage to 1.60 and scale to 2.10. Union recognition was not granted, but a grievance procedure was considered. Several arrests and curfews marked protests. The union and SCLC pledged ongoing collaboration to organize hospital workers nationwide.
Bardstown Kentucky pleads for mournful days as four members of Battery C 138th Artillery Guard unit die in a Vietnam base attack. Spec 4 Collins Simpson Moore and McIlroy from nearby Willisburg are named among the fallen. A mourning period extends to July 4 with a memorial service planned at a local high school auditorium.
Winnie Ruth Judd, the Arizona double-murder convict known as the tiger woman, was identified in Danville California as Marian Lane, a 54 year old domestic worker. Sheriff Lt. Robert Lang said fingerprints photos and a scar confirmed her identity. Arizona would extradite. She was arrested after investigators traced license plates and estate records tied to Marian Lane.

President Nixon announced plans for a historic trip as first US president to Romania with stops in Manila Jakarta Bangkok New Delhi Islamabad and Bucharest. The journey begins July 23 from Washington with Apollo 11 astronauts seen returning aboard the Hornet around July 24 near Johnston Island.
TOPEKA AP Gov Robert Docking announced he has named former Senate Democratic leader Charles D Joseph as chairman of the new five member State Board of Tax Appeals to begin July 1. The board includes three Democrats and two Republicans. Members are William D Anderson Jr James Zarda Ralph McCarty and Eugene C Lee.
A 14 pound pigtail monkey named Bonny will launch from Cape Kennedy aboard a Delta rocket at 11 10 p m EDT for a 30 day orbit in a flying laboratory. Brain and heart implants will transmit data while Bonny undergoes memory tests and receives food rewards.
