Brazilian airliner crashes with 51 aboard near Rio de Janeiro

A Convair carrying 51 passengers including an American disappeared while approaching Rio de Janeiro and wreckage was found in Guanabara Bay. Navy teams recovered bodies and luggage. one congressman, Jose Gomes Talarico, had boarded in Brasilia. Pilot Joao Belloc radioed approaching Santos Dumont before contact was lost.

Calf Killed In Car Collision Near Odense Store

A Hereford calf owned by Stan Harding was killed when it ran into a car a mile and a half south of the Odense store yesterday. Sheriff Jerry Sloan identified the driver as Gus Collins of Iola. Sloan said he did not see the car or know its damage.

Tornado Ruins 22 Years of Work at Pottstown Farm

In five minutes a dark funnel struck the Imbody homestead near Barto Pennsylvania destroying the 161 year old house and barn. The family with four children and two neighbors survived though their riding horse was killed and all accumulated belongings were lost.

Castro Wagers Million Tons of Cuban Sugar

In a TV address Fidel Castro said he would concede Cuba’s U S sugar market share if 1961 production falls by a million tons, and would seek a million ton rise if output grows. TOPEKA AP First ship ments of new crop Kansas wheat from southern counties show a sharp rise in test weight to 62.4 pounds per bushel from 60.0 in 1959 and the 10 year average of 59.8. Unknown Assailant Kills Paratrooper in New Jersey

A 38-year-old former paratrooper, Joseph F. Lupoli, was shot in the temple while in bed at his Lake Hiawatha home. His wife Ann, 26, reported seeing a gunshot flash but could not describe the intruder. A .22 pistol was found near the door. three children slept nearby. no motive or suspect identified.

Bullet Barrage Kills Policeman on Harbor Street

A bar rage of bullets killed Patrolman Vernon J. Owings on the waterfront as he and partner Richard A. Brizimbine stopped two men for car trouble. Brizimbine was wounded in the leg and two suspects Ross Wilson and Warren Durfee were arrested after a city-wide manhunt. Durfee allegedly fired the fatal shot. both suspects were held on assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder charges.

Homeowners Insurance Premiums Cut in Kansas

TOPERA AP reports that homeowners policy premiums will drop 10 to 15 percent starting July 1 in Kansas. Insurance Commissioner Frank Sullivan says the cut saves about one million dollars annually for new and renewed policies under the package plan. Existing insureds gain broadened coverage including TV antenna loss protection as volumes grew from 2.5 million in 1957 to an anticipated 15 million by year end 1960.

Soldier Is Killed Near Junction City

Counterfeit Twenty Found in Topeka Bank

A counterfeit twenty dollar bill appeared at a Topeka bank, one of about a dozen similar notes in the region in the past ten days. Secret Service agent Howard Haas noted the backs are blue green rather than green, with authorities tracing the pattern to Kansas City sightings.
