Kennedy crash injures senator. two die in apple orchard

Senator Edward M. Kennedy was hospitalized with a broken back after a private plane crashed in an apple orchard near Barnes Airport, Westfield. Pilot Edwin T. Zimny, 48, and Kennedy aide Edward Moss, 41, died. Birch Bayh and wife were wounded mildly. Kennedy remains in fair condition with fractures to ribs and lower spine.

Civil Rights Bill Passed by Senate

After 83 days of debate the Senate approved the civil rights bill by 73 to 27, sending it to the House for expected quick passage. Leaders foresee Johnson signing by July 4, with praise from civil rights supporters and alarm from some Southern governors.

Barry Goldwater Leads with 694 Delegates for Nomination

AP survey shows Goldwater at 694 first ballot votes, 39 above the 655 needed to clinch the Republican nomination. Scranton rises to 138, Rockefeller 105, Lodge 45, Smith 15, Nixon 8, with 84 for favorites and 219 uncommitted. Maryland adds nine to Scranton, gaining two from Rockefeller and two from uncommitted.

Burglars Active At Five Places In Galesburg

Burglars operated at five sites in Galesburg and nearby areas, including the VC fertilizer plant office on West 21st, Burlington Mfg. Co. on West 3rd, and Empire Billiards on East Main. At Galesburg sites Shaw Mig Co. plant now Bush Hog and Galesburg Lumber Co. were entered. Losses were light overall but the fertilizer plant office suffered notable damage. Police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigated, with about $25 in change taken at the Burlington office and several small items missing at other sites.

Louis Martella, 64, described by police as toothless, was charged with petty larceny for stealing 24 tubes of toothpaste from a Commack, New York supermarket. He disappeared from court while being taken to a detention cell, and police issued an alarm for him.

Storms Roam Over Iowa Cause Damage Across Southwest

Severe weather lashed Iowa with tornadoes and heavy rain. In Page County near Shenandoah to Clarinda a tornado path damaged vehicles, homes, and farms with at least three injured and several structures destroyed. Airport hangars and planes were hit in Clarinda, while residents sheltered in a building with no serious injuries. Topekan Killed in Crash on U. S. 24 East of Perry

John P. Kennedy 25 of Topeka was killed when a car failed to make a curve east of here on U S 24 and struck a utility pole. His brother David Kennedy also of Topeka was injured.

53 Persons Killed In Formosa Crash

A Nationalist Chinese airliner with 48 passengers, many Americans, crashed near Taichung Formosa. Kansas Coach Easton Revives Man in Rain in Oregon

W E Bill Easton of the University of Kansas was elected vice president of the National Collegiate Track Coaches Association. He revived Robert McCord of Baker Oregon after McCord slumped from what appeared to be a heart attack, using mouth to mouth resuscitation. McCord was treated at a hospital and released.

Traffic Fatalities Log Reports 1964 Kansas Death Toll

TOPEKA AP reports Kansas traffic fatalities over the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. Saturday June 1, 1964. The log lists 40 deaths, up from 37 the previous year and 269 for the year to date. Comparisons show 1963 had 237 fatalities in the same period.

Five Die In Jones County Car Collision Near Oklahoma City

Five youths from Jones were killed in a two car crash on a winding county road. Victims Shirley Ann Britt 20 Marie Brodrick 12 Keith Choate 17 Sammy Williams 17 Bob Hopens 16. Ray Britt 20 and Michael Hogan 17 were involved with Hogan injured critically. The boys were members of Jones high school football team.
