Fire damages Johnson Mortuary elevator shaft in Chanute
Firefighters battled a shaft fire at Johnson Mortuary 101 North Highland Chanute on Friday using three trucks for over an hour. Acting captain Leon Carder was treated for smoke inhalation and overheating and seven others reported no serious injuries. Manager Fred Johnson blamed a faulty electrical system and noted prior fire damage from January 22.

Big spenders propel economy with higher early 1976 income
