Humboldt Reserves Head Home

The Shore Platoon from Humboldt and the 662nd Transportation Company at Camp Leroy Johnson finish two weeks of training. Commanded by 1st Lt Leonard E. Robbins, with sergeant M-Sgt. William Clifford, the unit enjoys beach access at Ship's Island and Gulf views. They expect to return by air on June 18 and invite qualified men to contact Lt. Robbins.

Thunderstorms Sweep Plains as Cold Front Pairs with Hail

A line of thunderstorms pushed by a Canadian air mass moved across the Plains States with light precipitation, a tornado near Grand Island Nebraska causing minor damage, and record cold readings in parts of the Midwest and Northeast. Readings fell to the 40s in Idaho Montana and the Great Lakes region while the Southeast saw heavy rain in Florida and Virginia hail. Women of the church delivered snacks and coffee after work, while a corps of ten men restored a basement and volunteers returned books and supplies to the church shelves. Donald Dean Metzinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. S F Metsinger of St. Joseph Missouri, received a second lieutenant commission at the Air Force base in San Antonio Texas on June 17. The Marys and Marthas class of the Methodist church met with plans for a July 20 breakfast at the church. Lawton Circle of the Grand Army of the Republic met with 11 members as planning for an outdoor July meeting in Lincoln Park. Charles W. Strieby, architecture professor at Michigan State University, arrived for a vacation visit.

Humboldt Methodist Church prepares for 100th anniversary

The Humboldt Methodist church begins preparations for its 100th anniversary this fall. A volunteer program led by Robert Hamm launched this week as the first step in the celebration.

Church Men Complete Basement Painting Project

A group of men organized a “house cleaning” project at the church to paint the basement. They moved ladders and equipment and carried paint into the building at the start of the week and finished the work by Friday in the evenings.

Funeral attendance and aftermath in Chanute and Independence

Mrs C C Strieby his sister Mrs Homer Smith and family and his aunt Mae Wilson attended the funeral of Don McDonald at Grace Episcopal church in Chanute. Afterward the family went to Independence where interment occurred. Mr and Mrs Lute DeWitt traveled to Chanute for the services. Frank Record returned to Long Beach California after visiting relatives and friends.

4 H Club News Shamrock Elects Officers

The Shamrock 4 H Club photography group elected Mary Lee Johns president Barbara Arthur vice president Carol LaRue secretary and Jay Waltermire reporter. They met with leader Mrs Worth Waltermire to study camera parts and care. Carol LaRue will host next meeting Thursday at 8 p.m.

Determinettes Report Shedding Pounds at Sawyer Hall Meeting

The Determinettes meet at Grace Episcopal church Sawyer Hall where 18 women attended and 123 pounds have been shed since the first meeting four weeks ago, including 25 pounds this week. Mrs. Everett Garner was named reporter and Mrs. W A Brazil as program chairman. Mrs. Bruce Burris demonstrated exercises for overweight persons. A reducing pass will be chosen next meeting.
