Former Teamster Union President Dave Beck was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of accepting $200,000 from two trucking firm presidents. The presidents named are Roy Fruehauf of Fruehauf Trailer Co. in Detroit and Burge Seymour of Associated Transport Inc. in New York.

In Geneva, Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko asked for 24 more hours to study the Western plan for a Berlin stopgap settlement. Western ministers agreed, hoping for negotiation on a proposal offering German personnel at supply checkpoints and a path to a summit. The plan would keep the 11,000 US Britain and France troops armed only with conventional arms and avoid nuclear bases in West Berlin.
A Cuban Airlines jet was hijacked Tuesday night by five soldiers from Batista’s army and a gunman. The craft circled to Miami before landing at Miami International Airport where the hijackers sought political asylum. Passengers, including Americans, endured a 75 minute flight with a shaken crew and tense standoff. The leader, Lt Marquez Lopez, waved his gun as the group demanded asylum.
An unidentified object visible to the naked eye but not on radar streaked across Nevada skies Tuesday night. It marked the third mysterious sighting in three weeks, with the Air Force confirming none of the objects could have been planes.

The Coyle brothers, wanted for a Philadelphia liquor store holdup and a police killing, were trapped by a 400-strong posse in a woods near Middleboro. William Coyle, 22, was fatally shot. John Coyle, 24, survived. Sedgwick, a hostage, escaped as officers closed in.
New York AP reports steel wage negotiators broke a bargaining deadlock affecting terms of a new contract set to expire June 30. The industry favored continued talks with four man teams while the union pushed for direct meetings with the 12 major companies and their local unions. Progress reports were to be shared as 12 separate meetings were scheduled for the afternoon with a Thursday conclusion.
Kansas City Star printers threaten a strike if a satisfactory settlement is not reached at a 2 p.m. meeting with management. Negotiations since last Sept. 30, about 400 employees represented by Typographical Union No. 80. A union official cited demands for stronger union security and fringe benefits over wages.

Eisenhower also rejected inviting steel company representatives and workers to a White House conference to avert a strike.
