Early morning in Chanute, police used an electric traffic timer at 17th and Santa Fe for one hour starting 6 AM. By 6:45 AM, Jimmy D. Priffitt of Neodesha posted a $5 bond for speeding 43 in a 30 zone, with four total arrests reported.
Philadelphia society girl Stella Reeves 26 flies to Brazil to hunt jaguars with Sasha Siemel 69 a veteran hunter in Matto Grosso jungle. Reeves aims to learn spear hunting and hopes to bag a jaguar on the expedition.
Wheat arrivals at Chanute elevators rise to a flood like pace with early crop averaging 60 pounds test weight and moisture near 14 percent. Farmers expect yields to be about 25 percent below last year, with 22 to 25 bushels per acre on early wheat and barley down about 20 percent. Local price stands at $1.61 per bushel with a one cent rise planned.
Cities in eastern Kansas and western Missouri organize to oppose Cities Service Gas Co. rate increases totaling 10.5 million dollars per year. Chanute plans to contribute 790 dollars, with Kansas City and others sharing costs to raise 100000 dollars for opposition. A June 23 meeting in Kansas City will decide reps and actions.
Bernice FE Olson of 604 S Lincoln suffered bruises to her right arm and leg after a two car crash at 3rd and Lincoln at 11 AM. Olson, driving a 1953 Plymouth southbound on Lincoln, collided with Marie Martin Boyce at 305 S Larson who was turning left from Lincoln onto 3rd. Police said Olson hit the right front of Boyce’s car, damaging both vehicles.
Ronald F. Alley, 36, a former Army major convicted of wartime collaboration in Korea, returns to Bar Harbor Maine with his wife Erna and two children Evelyn and Gary. He plans to work, rebuild their seven room house, and seek justice while noting tuberculosis and limited job offers since his release from Leavenworth after 3 years and 7 months in prison.

Omar R. Wilson, 73, was treated for shock and a facial injury at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a collision with a parked car at 1:15 p.m. He said he blacked out and hit the rear of a 1956 Ford owned by E. D. Horne at 415 West, with both vehicles damaged and Wilson’s 1950 Ford towed away.
Kansas City AP reports Anthony Modock 39 waived his preliminary hearing on a federal bank robbery charge tied to a $4,825 holdup of the Bank of Osceola Missouri. Modock was transported to Kansas City from Osceola Monday with bond set at $2,500.
Two Parsons residents Charles Baker 16 Erick Greenfeather 21 and Phillip Dykes 15 are held in Erie awaiting transfer of Dykes from probate court. Baker confessed to robberies at Smith service station south of Erie and Owens general store at South Mound with an axe used to break in. The trio allegedly took $30 cash about five cartons of cigarettes and a pair of shoes plus foodstuffs. Greenfeather was arrested in Miami Oklahoma.
A MiG jet fighter attack over the Sea of Japan seriously injures one crewman aboard a U.S. Navy patrol plane. The defense department did not specify the attackers' nationality and the State Department said it was not yet established. A spokesman promised an official protest once identified as warranted and vicious.
Army engineers award a 2.58 million dollar contract to List and Clark Construction of Kansas City for the first stage of the Pomona dam project in the Marais des Cygnes watershed. Construction expected to begin within 10 days to two weeks, with bids opened June 3 in Ottawa.
Sheriff Adnah Harlow says the Coyle brothers John and William may have breached a large posse while a gunfight with authorities unfolds. Coins believed dropped by the fugitives are found in woods after a liquor store robbery that netted 112 dollars. William Sedgwick, held hostage in Philadelphia, is released after ten days. Two missing college girls are found safe at a Bourne roadblock and identified as Priscilla Jury and Elizabeth Mc Kay.
Dean Elder, 19, of Stark, was hospitalized with a broken leg and bruises after his 1957 Ford left a county road on loose gravel east of Kimball. He swerved to avoid a 1952 Chevrolet driven by Clarence Cox, lost control, struck a pole, and ended 130 feet into a field. The accident occurred at 6 10 p.m. and his car was towed to a garage.

In Geneva Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and U S Secretary of State Christian Herter met at Gromyko's request to discuss the Berlin phase of the Big Four conference. Western diplomats sense possible new proposals on breaking the Berlin deadlock or winding up the talks as Britain and the United States weigh a possible summit. Herter met British Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd amid reports of Western splits on a summit. A stopgap Western formula seeks minimal terms for a summit while setting aside Khrushchev's free Berlin plan and a united Berlin by free election.
Robert Allen outlined a nine week course to boost business influence in politics at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Tioga Hotel. Twenty two people attended and nine are needed to start. Materials cost six dollars per person and weekly meetings are planned. Howard Jester noted nine have shown interest and a coordination meeting will set class arrangements. Ebur Schultz called for committee reports.

Kenneth Adkins 22 released his 3 year old half sister Nyra Jean Kennedy after 17 hours of siege. Lawmen with tear gas prepared for a blast but Adkins surrendered after 11 minutes of talks with lawyer Mervin Bejl. He had threatened to kill officer Logan Cox in a Western style duel.
AP reports a hot and sunny outlook across Kansas with little change through Wednesday. Western towns reached near 100 degrees, Garden City and Cedar Bluff hit the century mark, eastern areas near 90, with scattered showers possible in the west and mild nights upper 60s to 70s.
