Seven persons were hurt in a collision between a car and a pickup on a county road ten miles north of Emporia. Fire destroys crude heater at Mid-America refinery
A blast and fire at the Mid-America refinery on North Santa Fe at 4 p.m. Saturday caused an estimated loss of 10 000 to 15 000 dollars. No serious injuries were reported aside from a minor facial burn to George Frederick J Jr. The explosion followed burners going out and natural gas feeding the flames. A 4 inch gas line and a 2 inch oil line were ruptured. flames confined to the heater, hot oil pump and pump house. Firefighters shut off gas and oil, ending the blaze after about 30 minutes. Police and fire units guarded the scene. The refinery may be halted for a few days but crude deliveries and product purchases remain unaffected. Cunningham said the loss is at least partly covered by insurance.
