Earl Alexander of Tunis, a top World War II commander, died at 77 in London. He led British forces in Burma and North Africa and served as commander in chief of all allied armies in Italy in 1943 and 1944 before becoming supreme commander in the Mediterranean. The cause of death was not announced.
Seven police officers and a newsman were wounded as sporadic clashes with youths erupted in Sacramento's Oak Park area. Police arrested up to 40 people after a raid on a Black Panther office, using tear gas to scatter occupants.
Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller starts the third leg of his presidential mission with a nine hour nonstop flight from Kennedy Airport to Brasilia Brazil. Opponents promise hostile demonstrations in Brazil and Uruguay as Rockefeller conducts fact finding prior to any campaign.
The Rev. Stephen Cree of Montrose Iowa was removed from the United Methodist ministry after publishing The New Act of Sex which argues that sex with contraception may not violate Biblical adultery prohibitions. Cree, married with five daughters, says church officials keep quiet publicizing the case while they act. Bishop James S Thomas criticized Cree for disregarding church stances on marriage and family life.
The Tulsan collided with a Mid Continent Freight Co. semitrailer at Earlton crossing at 9 33 a m causing 20000 in engine and car damage. The trailer valued at 8000 was a total loss and 1000 wall damage occurred to Earlton Grain Co. building. No injuries were reported and about 20 passengers were aboard. The truck driver Robert Williams Tulsa said he stopped then crossed since he did not see the train. Train engineer T W Boman of Chanute assisted by another engine to Kansas City. Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce monthly board meeting set for 8 p m at Memorial Building.
Rep Garner Shriver lauded flood control work as a prime use of federal funds at the dedication of the Marion Dam and Reservoir. The $13.8 million Corps project on the Cottonwood River near Marion began 1964 and was approved for flood control in 1968, with 146 800 acre feet total storage and 60 000 for floodwater.

Six chain saws valued at $200 each were reported missing in a burglary at G and W Tractor Co on 1815 S Santa Fe. The building was entered by breaking a door glass and reaching inside to turn the knob. Police logged the 8 a.m. report.

The Supreme Court ruled the House had no power to exclude Rep. Adam Clayton Powell in 1967. Chief Justice Warren said the Constitution requires membership for those who meet age, citizenship, and residency requirements. the House cannot bar a duly elected member. Powell, Harlem Democrat, had faced censure and loss of seniority before being seated in the 91st Congress.
Housing officer Ralph Caldwell deals with abandoned lots and overgrown weeds in a wet spring. County records show delinquent taxes and missing owner addresses, delaying tax sales of 140 properties. City bears mowing costs while awaiting July updates, risking budget strain and higher taxes.
