Mike Burke, 9, of Pittsburg leapt into a motel pool though he cannot swim. About six bystanders, ambulance crews, and hospital staff revived him after swallowing water. His mother hopes the incident prompts swimming lessons for children.
Hal Jones an 11 year old from Yates Center was bitten on the right middle finger by a squirrel while walking home from class. He received first aid and a tetanus shot and the squirrel was tested for rabies at Kansas State University Manhattan. results showed no rabies. The finger is healing and the boy is doing well.
Pentagon reverses stance and makes Civilian efficiency expert A. Ernest Fitzgerald available to Congress next week after he said he was ordered to withhold documents on the Mark II and C5A programs. Senator Proxmire condemned the move as muzzle tactics and pressed for full disclosure. Fitzgerald had been told not to release further information, pending a department response.
Charles Ray, 43, who served 18 years of a life sentence for a 1950 murder, had his sentence reduced to 38 years after a Saline County District Court review. Judge Morris Hoobler ruled Ray was deprived of counsel and ordered the new hearing based on a transcript found in the courthouse attic. Ray, with Fort Riley soldiers, killed a Salina man during a tavern incident while en route to Korea. The judge credited court-appointed attorney Jack Stewart for persistence in pursuing the Supreme Court case.

A Santa Fe passenger train struck a semi at the Earlton US 169 crossing at 9:33 a.m. No injuries occurred among about 20 passengers or the truck driver. The truck from Mid- Continent Freight Co. was driven by Robert Williams of Tulsa. The northbound train traveled 75 mph. the trailer separated from the cab and was demolished. The engine would need extensive repairs and passengers faced alternative arrangements afterward.
The United States announces the 1st and 2nd brigades of the 9th Infantry Division and Regimental Landing Team 9 of the 3rd Marine Division will leave South Vietnam by the end of August. Remaining unit is 9th Division's 3rd Brigade at Tan An in the Mekong Delta. Marine team stationed north of the DMZ.

Topek a AP clearing is in prospect for most of Kansas on Sunday with highs in the upper 60s to 70s. Rain fell across western Kansas Friday and spread eastward, with heavier totals from Greensburg to Olathe. Showers and storms were forecast in the southeast and intermittent rain elsewhere.
