Altoona man donates 112 blood units since 1944
Alfred H. Barnett of Altoona has given more than 112 blood units to the American Red Cross Bloodmobile since 1944. The Bloodmobile will visit Chanute at the Central Park Building on Monday and Tuesday, with the Red Cross Center taking appointments. Barnett, a Beech Aircraft retiree, notes his first donation during World War II and plans to continue donations when visiting family in Florida or North Dakota.

Texas man charged with murder of Salina officer
James Earl Crawford 37 of Pecos Texas faces first degree murder and aggravated robbery charges in the shooting death of Salina Police Officer Jerry R Ivey a five year veteran and father of three. Investigators say Crawford used a police band radio to monitor the pursuit and was aided by a second suspect. The officer was shot after a confrontation at a service station near Interstate 70 and is the first Salina officer killed in the line of duty.

Unemployment aid for teachers ends under new bill
President Ford signed a 15 billion dollar supplemental bill to fund veterans and Social Security pensions and to block summer unemployment benefits for teachers. Biking Across Kansas Ends At St Paul Monastery
A week long 525 mile bicycle trek called Biking Across Kansas concluded in Pittsburg with 75 riders finishing at St Paul Monastery in a stopover after riding from the Colorado line. Riders aged 13 to 56 came from Kansas and several other states. Larry Christie of Wichita chaired the event organized by a Wichita bicycle club to promote biking and Bikecentennial 76. Rider groups followed daily legs to Scott City Ransom Larned Sterling Newton and Eureka with a 3:30 p.m. Friday arrival in St Paul. Monastery facilities provided showers and separate lodging for men and women.
