Severe winds and driving rain halted the SeKan-O-Rama pageant at City Park forcing a late finish. Crew member Seth GrayLI was bruised, scenery damaged, and one performer bruised, as about 1,000 spectators sought shelter. Scenery is being repaired for tonight's program with a youth talent show at 7:40.
Nancy Sue Heilman of Willing Workers 4 H and Glenda Lynn Timmons of First National Bank of Thayer lead the field as the first official entrants. Entries close next Monday with forms from Floyd Potter or John DeMott. Winners receive an expense paid trip to Topeka for the World Food Fair and a chance to advance to state competition in Hutchinson.
Tonight at City Park stadium the Centennial program features Youth Talent Show at 7:40 p.m. Golden Clippers Laddie Club at 8:15 p.m. SeKan-O0-Rama pageant second show at 8:30 p.m. with fireworks about 10:30 p.m. A rock and roll street dance occurs on Main in front of Centennial headquarters at 10:30 p.m. Tomorrow continues with registration all day and a 3 p.m. special at the headquarters, plus Golden Clippers Saddle Club at 8:15 p.m. and SeKan-O-Rama third show at 8:30 p.m. with fireworks again.
In La Cygne Kansas W E Ted Baer 71 and Ronald Farris 11 drowned Tuesday in the Marais Des Cygnes River Baer who had retired from Frisco Railroad telegraphy had guided hundreds of boys on hikes and swims Ronald waded beyond his depth and Baer jumped in to save him both bodies recovered from about 20 feet of water Bobby Farris 12 and Dennis Frank 11 from Paola were present at the scene.
The first car of 1961 Kansas wheat arrived from Independence. It graded No 1 hard with a test weight of 61 pounds a moisture content of 14.0 and 9.9 percent protein.
An autonomous vehicle speeding backward in dizzy circles on a highway killed its owner who was attempting to warn other motorists, authorities said. The incident occurred in Greenwood as the driverless car plowed into the victim, prompting safety inquiries.
John L. Brummett a 59 year old evangelist and former music teacher was run over on Missouri 150 in front of his home. Witnesses say a car circled the area about a dozen times before being stopped by Army soldier Arthur W. Janklow who leaped aboard the driver side. Janklow who was at a Nike base in Pleasant Hill Mo said a pillow jammed on the accelerator kept the car moving as he braked. Sgt Bob Davis of the Missouri Highway Patrol called Janklow a real hero and noted the car could have struck gas pumps at a nearby filling station. Brummett on crutches from a knee operation dropped his crutches and ran after the car but was hit on the second or third circle. No one could determine what started the car.
Midway Consolidated High School placed seventh among 77 Class B schools in a statewide Emporia State College scholarship contest. Top performers include Nancy Jones in freshmen English and mathematics, Judy Thouvenell in general business, and Sally Jones in home economics. Honorable mentions cover multiple subjects. two junior high students also recognized. Betty Pierce earns a spot at a University of Montana summer camp for speech and dramatics.
Ira O Hutchinson of Chanute sues Clarence Manly and Hans Herold over a January 16 Lincoln and Elm collision. He alleges Manly’s negligence caused permanent injuries including aggravation of a prior back ailment and nervous-system impairment. seeks 20000 for injuries and 146.33 for car damages.
Ronnie R. Trebbe, 22, is charged with assault with intent to kill after his wife Marsha, 19, was stabbed at a night club east of Topeka. She remains in fair condition at St. Francis Hospital. the complaint was signed by Mrs. Trebbe. Police say she was stabbed by a group of men, per Sheriff Vernon Robinson.
Thirty two members of the 662d Transportation Co Shore Platoon Humboldt unit in Humboldt Kansas and 80 members of the parent unit in Emporia Kansas finish two weeks annual summer camp training in New Orleans. The Shore Platoon is led by 1st Lt Leonard Robbins and First Sergeant William Clifford. The company commander is Capt Lee R Stolfus. Reservists travel by plane and return home this weekend. Training covered loading ships for ocean transport and cargo handling with regular Army staff support on Ship Island and Camp Leroy Johnson. The Humboldt unit comprises Reservists from Chanute Humboldt Yates Center Iola Colony Bronson Thayer Stark and Fredonia.
Three Wichita men George Washington Jr Charles Barnett and Martin Banuelos were killed when their car collided with a westbound Santa Fe Super Chief train at a county road crossing three miles west of Newton. All three worked for W. M. Hartman Manufacturing Co. of Hutchinson and were likely on their way to work amid heavy mist. Ten people have died at this crossing in 22 years.
Topeka AP notes a 24 hour traffic death log ending 9 am Wednesday covering June 17. The report compares the 1961 tally to the 1960 period, listing 230 fatalities versus 199 cases.
Kansas City park board president Frank A. Theis sought to illustrate a zoo speech at a luncheon with four chickens two baby goats two lambs and a duck. The noisy barnyard chorus from the animals interrupted the talk and forced him to cut the speech short.

JayCees met at the Maple Leaf last night to hear reports on the Miss Kansas Pageant the Chanute Junior Golf tournament and the forthcoming Inaugural Ball. Miss Chanute 1961 Carol Knox received 38 good luck telegrams and flowers. Eddie Ranz and Doug Ricketts will join the state JayCee golf meet July 15 16 with top four state winners advancing to nationals in Denver. The Inaugural Ball is set for July 1 with dinner at Tioga Hotel and a public dance at the National Guard Armory. The group planned a national convention trip and caravan details and noted Chanute placed seventh in the Parade of Cities. A June 2 business meeting was canceled due to the ball. A letter protesting a queen contest rule change was authorized.
Mrs. Helen Long aged 67 from Cozad Nebraska died after a car truck collision at a southwest Wichita intersection. She passed away several hours after the crash.
