He provides his Tokyo address and notes his good English while requesting a note in the paper to connect with pen pals in the United States. The letter was mailed from Tokyo for Chanute readers to respond.
Topeka reports sun returns after 10 days with a new west front bringing cloudy skies late tonight and Wednesday. No precipitation expected with temps near mid 80s in the west and warming to the east by Wednesday. Relative humidity around 52 percent. barometer 28.86 inches and falling. Precip yesterday 0.04 inch. Forecast calls for fair tonight, partly cloudy and warmer Wednesday with low near 60 and highs in the mid 80s.
Manila crowds of 1.5 million to 3 million welcomed President Eisenhower as he rode with Philippine President Garcia from the airport to downtown Manila. The event marked a historic, exuberant reception amid heat and confetti, highlighting strong U S Philippines ties and praise for peace efforts.
The city commission accepted a bid of 30,841 from McWane Cast Iron Pipe Co. for 10,100 feet of cement lined pipe for water line extensions including 6,300 feet of 10 inch, 2,500 feet of 8 inch and 1,300 feet of 6 inch. The 10 inch pipe will tie into the elevated storage tank work at West Seventh and 4th and Santa Fe. In Boulder Colorado a robbery at a new supermarket ends with the robber telling manager Claude Meyers he was satisfied with the service. The thief directs Opal Switzer to place all large bills into a box and leaves with it, declaring he has been taken care of.
Miami Beach AP report covers Dr. Eugene Turrell remarks at the AMA meeting noting emotional distress prior to surgery may delay healing and raise risk of death. He cites research linking hopelessness to nervous-system activation and shorter survival for highly anxious cancer patients.
Two youths Carl Ray Chase and Jay Lea King aged 19 and 20 fled after overpowering a guard during transfer from Hutchinson Reformatory to Lansing Penitentiary. A citywide search involved over 100 officers, a helicopter, and bloodhounds. They were found hiding in a south Ottawa playhouse and face five felony charges including possession of revolvers after prior conviction and grand larceny.
A Pacific Northern Airlines four engine Constellation with about 12 aboard went missing on its Cordova to Anchorage route. It departed Cordova at 6 16 a m PST and was due in Anchorage about an hour later. The airline reported no pilot trouble and listed the craft as overdue.
Seven month old Mark Bright, son of Mr and Mrs Dean Bright of 710 North Forest, Kansas City Kansas, awaits heart surgery at University of Kansas Medical Center. The Mark Bright fund reached 1496.42 with 190.31 raised since yesterday noon from varied donors including Warwick Wax employees Burlington Manufacturing City Electric Dept and several church groups.
Kansas Power and Light plans a 175000 kilowatt unit at Tecumseh east of Topeka. The $19 million project will boost plant output by 86 percent. Construction starts in July with completion set for spring 1962.

Lawrence campus enrollment nears 1959 levels with more than 3000 students. Registration opens with 2360, up 3 from last year. KU Medical Center in Kansas City reports 335, down 12, totaling 2695 students for the summer.
Stephen Bayne 17 refuses a citizenship award from the Westbury American Legion post during senior ceremonies on Long Island. He denounces Legion policies, prompting school officials to apologize and plan a letter of apology to the post. Bayne, a top student and Harvard scholar recipient, was absent from class after an extended vacation and is set to graduate June 26.
Sunshine is needed before general harvesting can begin in ripened wheat along the southern Kansas border. Wet fields slow progress after a cool damp week, with some cutting possible in Anthony and Wellington if weather permits. Wheat near Wichita Newton Hutchinson and Elkhart ripens rapidly and limited combines are available from Caldwell Wellington Anthony and Kiowa.
Carl Barker a 38 year old engineer in Milwaukee received a transistorized pacemaker from University of Minnesota surgeons in January after heart attacks slowed his heart to about 20 beats per minute. The device with an eight inch lead attached to the ventricle allows control of his pulse to 80-85 bpm by day and about 60 at night. Barker kept no sensation from the shocks and monitors his heart with a flashing light on the unit.
