Prof Emma Auer of the University of Kansas stores a large hat collection in her office and uses fashion talk to study trends. A five foot box of winter hats arrived at the journalism school amid talk of her past role with Harper's Bazaar and current teaching focus.
Two 10 year old boys Nguyen The Quang and Doan Loc from Vietnam arrive in Los Angeles en route to Columbia Missouri for open heart surgery funded in part by U.S. servicemen in Vietnam. They will have free surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine with all travel and ground costs covered. Airlines donated their flight and return trip to Saigon. Leslie Smith a missionary with United World Missions accompanies them.
AP dispatch from Kansas City says three separate fatal shootings occurred overnight. Victims named are George Scott 20 Jimmy D Williams 22 and Henry Wooden 64. Wooden a Pinkerton employee died in a parking lot gun discharge incident at Village Green Apartments. Williams sought treatment at General Hospital after a back wound from an argument on Woodland Avenue. Scott was found fatally shot in the street near 43rd and Woodland.
Paris AP reports Georges Pompidou leads Alain Poher in a public opinion poll with 55 percent to 45 percent. The French Institute of Public Opinion released the latest figures on Wednesday, showing Pompidou slipping from 57 percent last week while Poher rose to 45. The election is set for Sunday.
A Spanish military court sentenced five Roman Catholic priests to 10 to 12 years in prison for Basque separatist activity. The priests were tried behind closed doors on charges of military rebellion and dispensing subversive propaganda as part of the Franco era crackdown in the Basque provinces.
In Paris the Viet Cong’s provisional revolutionary government replaced the National Liberation Front at the 21st negotiating session. Mrs Nguyen Thi Binh announced the change, while South Vietnam rejected recognition. the US and Saigon stated it does not alter the talks.
Senior High instructors Herb Snender and Jim Woods teach 96 Chanute students to focus on other drivers and potential danger points to reduce accidents. Students drive six hours with an instructor, ride as passengers 18 hours, and complete 44 hours of classroom work.
House Ways and Means Committee tentatively approves a 12 month extension of the income surtax with a special $1,100 low income allowance. About 13 million people would benefit while revenue impact runs around $660 million annually. House action slated for Monday after White House briefing with President Nixon.

Governor Docking announced plans to replace Charles D. McAtee as director of penal institutions. Col. R. N. Woodson of the Highway Patrol is a candidate, with McAtee's term ending July 1. Docking also suggested William W. Strukel may succeed Woodson as head of the Highway Patrol.
