First National Hollerin Contest Set for June in Spivey’s Corner

SPIVEY'S CORNER NC AP The first National Hollerin Contest will be held June 28 in this east central North Carolina community. Contest chairman says 28 applications have come in from the Carolinas and Georgia with entrants in their 60s and 70s who recall life before telephones when hollering to neighbors was common.

CORE seeks 6 billion for Negro financial institutions

The head of the Congress of Racial Equality urged U S banks to provide 6 billion dollars to support black financial institutions. Ray Innis said the money reflects compensation for years of exploitation and warned banks they may act from streets or drawing boards. He spoke at an urban problems conference with the American Bankers Association and the National Bankers Association.

Ford Strike Hits Maverick Plant in Claycomo

United Auto Workers strike the Ford assembly plant in Claycomo near Kansas City, the only U S site for the Maverick. Local 249 represents about 4,000 workers amid unresolved issues on workloads and safety after ten days of bargaining. A union spokesman noted the Canada plant is the only other Maverick producer.

Survivors From Destroyer Evans Return to Long Beach

Three quarters of the Evans survivors arrived at Long Beach by air from the Philippines and headed home after being handed leave papers. About two dozen families welcomed the men as Navy buses carried the rest away. Forty three survivors remained in the Philippines for injuries or for possible witnesses in an investigation.

Children Charged In Death Fire in West Virginia

Warrants charging murder were issued against 13 year old Roger Bailey and 15 year old Susan Bailey in connection with a deadly house fire that claimed the lives of their parents and 10 siblings. The siblings are held as arson investigators probe the blaze.

First Hearing Held Under Housing Code in Mc Allen

Hearing on the first petition under the city housing code was held in the city court room at 9 30 a m. Ralph Caldwell housing officer ordered removal of the house at 1710 S Edith belonging to L L Rowan Mc Allen Texas citing fire hazards inadequate lighting plumbing dilapidation disease risk unsightly condition vermin infestation and poor drainage. City Commission Lowers Taxi Coverage and Passes Curfew Rules

The Chanute city commission quickly approved changes to taxi insurance limits from 10 000 to 20 000 and 5 000 property damage, and directed an ordinance to raise injury coverage to 50 000 and 10 000 property damage. They also enacted new curfew rules and approved other measures including anti discrimination clause for the airport contract and protests to Santa Fe rail passenger service cuts.
