Left Hand district reports the first 1955 wheat crop sold in Chanute. Wheat variety Wichita harvested on land owned by Gerald Rowan near Vilas tested 62 and likely yields at least 25 bushels per acre.
Weather report notes continued cool conditions across Kansas with lingering clouds. Forecast calls for showers mainly in the east and north tonight and again tomorrow, with temperatures rising to the 60s statewide and lows in the 45 to 50 range. Rain amounts vary across towns, with scattered doses reported from Harveyville to Goodland and Dodge City traces.

The Little Stinker puzzle drew 2 042 entries with no winner. Prize goes to $90 for a correct solution to puzzle No 7. Explanations address clues linking words like verve devise pain rats and notes on nerve revise rain cats and cats.
Washington reports the House Appropriations Committee approved a $1 276 216 242 bill to fund federal power agencies for the coming year and rejected a $6 million request for a Dixon Yates Tennessee link line. It also earmarked funds to start a new Fulton TVA steam plant, potentially isolating Dixon Yates from current supply.
The first band concert of the summer series starts at 8 30 tonight in Central Park. Director D J Cox notes the late start stems from Bible School exercises finishing before 8 30. The series will visit various parks with marches and old favorites on the program.
The House Appropriations Committee approved seven million dollars to resume work on Tuttle Creek Dam on the Blue River near Manhattan Kansas. The addition comes in a year start appropriation bill. Eisenhower offered no Turtle Creek funds in his budget. Previously no funds had been allocated this two years. Work halted after a five million dollar initial appropriation was spent.
A Topeka area city board heard a ten-person delegation including five registered nurses urge an ordinance requiring annual health certificates for workers who handle unpackaged foods for human consumption. The measure will be studied further as armory site plans, water and sewer projects, and park improvements proceed.
More than 500 people have enrolled in the American Red Cross swimming program with many more expected. Mrs. Tebow, director, announced late enrollments will be accepted Saturday morning from 9 to 12. Parents should bring doctor permits. buses bring in swimmers from Erie Thayer Petrolia Earlton Altoona Humboldt and Lavenburg.
The House Appropriations Committee recommended 464 million dollars for water projects to Congress, a 48 million cut from President Eisenhower’s budget and 16 million below last year. Funds cover flood control navigation beach erosion and hydroelectric works including Kansas Toronto Wichita area Missouri River Oklahoma City floodway and Strawn Reservoir planning for Abilene Ottawa Pomona Salina Topeka.
Thirty-three light airplanes carrying 61 women began an inaugural across-water air race from Washington to Havana, with groups departing at 10:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The course includes a hop to Key West before the Havana leg. The last craft, piloted by Mrs Bertha Meana, left an hour late after radio trouble.
John Leroy Jensen of Hutchinson Kansas was killed and two others injured in a car crash 12 miles west of Streetor Illinois. The accident occurred today as responders transported the injured to area hospitals.
Charles Pritchard, 46, a railroad foreman, postponed his wingless, fins-based aerial craft test at Emporia airport after a shimmy in the nose wheel. About 1,500 locals watched as the octagonal aluminum ship veered off the runway during taxiing. organizers ferried it back to Kluger’s Metal Shop, with plans to try again in 10 days or two weeks.
Chanute has been chosen as one of nine sites for zone school meetings for local teacher association leaders next fall. Dates here are Oct 14 and 15 with about 150 educators from southeastern Kansas expected. The Kansas State Teachers Assn will host with officers delegates and superintendents attending.

John Westhoff has been named chief of the Walnut fire department succeeding the resigned Merton Kennedy. Kennedy becomes assistant fire chief at Olathe. A system of signals for town and country fires and tornado warnings has been discussed.
Jean Ashley opened with a 46 in the first round of the final 18 holes at the Tri-State Women's Golf Tournament. Rob ert Allen shot 44 and Virginia Hubbell 46, leaving Ashley at 126 for 27 holes, Allen 127, Hubbell 138, with 77 entrants finishing the three day event this afternoon.
Charle Oviatt aged 30 of Downs Kansas an employee of Sampson Construction Co died at Abilene Elevator Co after apparently falling ill and slipping from scaffolding inside a grain tank yesterday authorities said the incident occurred in Abilene Kansas frontier area.
State Highway Commission at Independence opened bids for US75 and K39 work in Buffalo and Roper areas. Freeto Construction Co. of Pittsburg led on grading and two bridges on US75 with totals around 251 553 25 and 29 948 90 and 19 456 60. B & O Construction Co. Salina low on one K29 bridge at 30 991 87. Seeding contracts awarded to Landscape Service Independence and J M Hedges Coffeyville.
One of four bundles of Chanute Tribunes delivered by airplane was missing last night and found today in a pond. The bundle, tightly wrapped for air drop, was dried out at the Savonburg post office. Mrs. John Jordan, postmaster, said she believed the papers were all right for delivery.
Kansas state accident records show 1 fatality in the last 24 hours, 227 to date in 1955, compared with 216 in the same period of 1954.
