Chanute s new Santa Fe Park becomes the permanent home for a coal burning locomotive moved from Santa Fe yards. The engine and tender were donated by the railroad and placed on ballasted rails after a staged rollout. Biting dogs prompt multiple police reports with several owners cited and hearings scheduled for Saturday.
Partly cloudy and continued cool conditions persist in Kansas through Friday. The body of 61 year old Romey A. Shaw was found near the back porch at 1702 S Highland around 10 a m. The coroner said a bullet wound from a 22 caliber rifle caused death with no definite motive. a grandson had left to fetch Mrs Shaw from a nearby grocery, and a rifle lay across the chest.

Voters in El Dorado Kansas will cast ballots in a special election on June 30 to approve a $1,000,000 municipal bond for a new sewage disposal plant. Estimated project cost totals about $965,461 excluding land, marking the city's largest single project.
The Washington to Havana women’s air race was postponed to tomorrow morning due to poor weather. Police investigated two non injurious accidents Wednesday. Charles L udna and Roy W. Kirkpatrick collided at Ash and Western around 6 20 p.m., damaging front of Udna’s car and left side of Kirkpatrick’s vehicle. A backed one half ton truck struck a parked car owned by Bob McAlexander at 1527 S Highland, damaging its right rear fender. the truck, driven by William Parrish of Fredonia, sustained no damage.
Twenty three freight cars of a westbound Santa Fe train derailed late last night near Lebo Kansas, twenty miles east of Emporia. An official said westbound tracks will be cleared by Friday night and traffic continues on eastbound tracks. The wreck, just east of the Lebo depot, also blocks the road from U S Highway 50s into town.
Ike Jones and Henry Fields, both of Chanute, were sentenced to up to 10 years in the state penitentiary at Lansing and paroled by District Judge B. M. Dunham after pleading guilty to assault with intent to kill. Alma Bernice Wray of Tulsa received a parole after pleading guilty to grand larceny. Jimmie Lee Morris and Delorez Thompson also pleaded guilty and began serving similar terms. The case involved theft from Montgomery Ward in Chanute.

Albert L. Paglino was found guilty of first degree murder in a Clayton Circuit Court verdict that sentenced him to life in prison. The case featured a bizarre escape scare when Paglino, thought to have escaped, reappeared in custody. He allegedly killed a drunk to fake his own death in a 1954 St Louis County fire and had previously fled to El Centro California after skipping bail. Willie Burchett, a migrant railroad worker, was identified as the victim.
