The Chamber announces a June 2022 membership push with 35 directors and committee chairs forming five teams. Kickoff is a June 20 coffee meeting at 9 30 a m with a LSMFT theme Lend Support Move Forward Together.
Senate Appropriations Chair Dennis Chavez and Senator Leverett Saltonstall forecast committee passage of a $40.166 billion defense bill with few changes. The measure would add 828 million to the House total, restoring 293 million for another attack aircraft carrier and 294 million for antiaircraft missiles, plus 75 million to complete bases, 285 million for the B70 bomber program, and speed Polaris submarine construction.
Mrs. Anna Scott, 33, fell for the pigeon drop swindle in Wichita after a similar warning. A man and a woman lured her with a tale of $20 000 found in a phone booth offering shares and earnest money. Scott withdrew funds totaling over $1 700 and her paycheck cash, then the pair vanished.
Mrs. Melissie Willis, 37, of Wichita, is bound over for district court on a second degree manslaughter charge after she stabbed her husband with a paling knife during a family fight. The death occurred on April 16. Willis claims she acted in defense of her daughter. She was released on a $2000 bond pending a September trial.
American glider pilot Richard E Schreder, lost during a world gliding event, landed in East Germany and was allowed to leave with his glider within 24 hours. He was met by his wife at the border as East German authorities released the crew and plane. Schreder had taken off from Cologne with 54 others en route to Fehmarn when misfortune forced a landing near Wismar. The East German Foreign Ministry said the crossing was not a serious case.
Gov. George Docking said he is not backing large corporations in the Fairfax Industrial District annexation dispute with Kansas City Kansas. He filed a friend of the court brief urging the case be heard on its merits as the Kansas Supreme Court stated only the attorney general has authority.
Mayor Paul F. Mitchum accuses Gov. Docking of aiding big corporations to dodge taxes while Kansas officials defend the annexation dispute. Senator McDowell backs state action as attorney Donald Martin, in Docking’s name, petitions the Supreme Court. Docking says any case deserves hearing. Martin works pro bono.
Dr. H. F. Swain of 605 S Central announces candidacy for Republican nomination in the August primary to seek re election as Neosho County coroner. A 1926 Kirksville Osteopathy graduate, he has practiced since then and was first elected in 1952. He is a Navy veteran with KU studies and is active in Presbyterian church, Masons, and Elks. wife and son Shelby are mentioned.
An AP report from Washington Kansas says a station wagon and a truck collided on U S 36 killing Henry Classen 80 of Beatrice Nebraska. Three others injured include Henry William Classen 76 of Beatrice and William C Doering Haddam Kansas. Henry William Classen and Doering were the drivers.
The new water treatment plant cleared a preliminary check by the State Board of Health though one filter was ordered resteri lized. Workers ran a test pig from the river intake to the plant to ensure the supply line is clear. Trial operation will start using the contaminated filter after resterilization, with a final acceptance inspection set for next month.
The Boy's Fund total rose to 878.28 by noon as donations from individuals and groups poured in for seven month old Mark Bright son of Dean and [missing] Bright. Contributions included Hendrix 10 Odd Fellows lodge 64 9.50 and many others. Mark will enter Kansas City medical center Monday for surgery.
A House Armed Services subcommittee approved transferring 50 acres of Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph Missouri from the Army to the Air Force. The remaining 82 acres would be disposed of while retained land would be used by the Missouri Air National Guard.
One of two men convicted of the Clutter family killings, Perry Edward Smith, has been on a 17 day hunger strike at the Kansas State Penitentiary. He is being force fed via IV while his co‑defendant Richard Hickock remains able to eat. Smith has not spoken since reporting via grapevine that he would starve himself to death. Smith weighed 163 pounds on April 5 and 141 now, with guards noting a weight drop beyond the apparent loss.
A test to check the steam whistle atop the city power plant was planned for this afternoon to augment the storm warning system. The whistle was sounded this morning for inspection and adjustment and city personnel would be stationed at various town locations for the actual test.
A 30 year old man was convicted of bombing a Negro pupil's home on February 9 in Little Rock. He received five years in prison and a $500 fine. Maceo Antonio Binns Jr. was the second Black defendant in the case.
President Eisenhower rejected Governor Rockefeller’s claim that defense is inadequate, saying the defense program is adequate for the times. Republican leaders Halleck and Dirksen said there was discussion of Rockefeller’s statement with the president, who allowed a small comment but declined to detail it. Nixon’s involvement was noted but not specified.
The Chanute Public Library announces summer hours. The children's department will be open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the adult department daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Saturdays. In June the adult dept. adds Thursday evenings. Summer vacation borrowing allows two months without renewal for registered patrons for older westerns mysteries and fiction. current fiction excluded.
The 22nd session of the Kansas annual conference of the Methodist Church elected Rev. Robert Hildyard of Hiawatha as conference secretary, succeeding Dr. Ronald E. Terry of Kansas City. Rev. Ronald L. Starr of Marysville was chosen conference statistician, succeeding Rev. C. Vincent Hall of Fort Scott. The gathering runs through Sunday with ministerial appointments to be announced.

FRANKFORT Kentucky AP Its illegal to hire a youth under 18 to operate a power lawn mower in Kentucky Industrial Relations Commissioner Owen Kerth issued the ruling Wednesday under a state law forbidding employment of miners to operate hazardous power driven machinery.
Spotty rains and unseasonably cool temperatures persisted in Kansas for the fifth straight day with no immediate change expected. Partly cloudy skies in western sections, flash flooding reported at Jetmore and Grinnell, Grinnell rainfall unofficially 5.42 inches, funnel clouds observed but no damage reported.

A committee of 17 Missouri and Kansas communities met in Kansas City to plan opposition to a $10,000,000 natural gas rate increase sought by Cities Service Gas Co. The Golden Clippers Saddle Club took two of three horsemanship trophies in a parade at Joplin yesterday. They won for performance and for traveling the greatest distance to participate. A Cassville unit earned the largest club participation trophy. Fourteen of Golden Clippers’ 18 members rode.
Joseph C. McDonald aged 55, operator of a Wichita electric sewer service, died Wednesday while working on a sewer line. Firemen could not determine if electrocution from a short in his line or a heart attack caused the death. An autopsy was ordered with a report due.
Topeka reports a Kansas traffic death log covering 24 hours to 9 a.m. The 1960 to 9 a.m. period shows 216 deaths, compared with the same span in 1959. The figure reflects road fatalities during the latest reporting window.
