Carl J. Wortman, Chanute Municipal Water plant superintendent, reported a catfish about 20 pounds swam into the main pump intake this morning. The fish entered via the river line, tangled in the propeller, leaving only a large head wedged in the blades despite hours of effort by Wortman and a worker.
June Dairy Month highlights in Neosho County show 500 county families rely on dairy, with 9,500 cows and $12 million income in 1958. In Ohio, URW and B F Goodrich end a 55 day strike affecting 14,000 workers across eight cities as Firestone talks continue.
Firemen from East St. Louis and four nearby communities fought a major blaze at the AAlco Wrecking and Supply yard threatening two butane tanks and four gasoline trucks. The flames reached the MacArthur Bridge but were contained, preventing a massive explosion and widespread damage. two tanks 8000 gallons each were cooled as trucks were moved away. The blaze drew about 2000 onlookers as 100 St. Louis firemen assisted, marking a rare out-of-jurisdiction response.
Forecaster Tom Arnold notes considerable cloudiness with showers and scattered thunderstorms tonight. Expect partly cloudy skies and little temperature change with lows in the 60s and highs around 80s, west cooler and eastern areas warmer. A few light showers fell in the eastern quarter yesterday with highs ranging 85 to 90 across Wichita Dodge City Goodland Garden City and Wamego.
Four men died when a runaway ore truck crashed into a cliff and crushed a pickup in Mexican Hat Utah. The victims include Less Polly of Grand Canyon Arizona and Ben Lee Jr. and Daniel Black, both of Mexican Hat. The truck reportedly lost braking power descending from a hill near the mine.
President Eisenhower arrives in Atlantic City to speak at the American Medical Society 108th annual meeting on the Doctor's Influence in Our Civilization. His remarks will be broadcast live on CBS and Mutual networks.
Arthur J. Eisenman, 51, stands trial in district court for the 1933 disappearance and murder of Nadine Vogel Love, a 6 year old who vanished April 20, 1933, as she walked home from school. Her body was found ten days later on a brushy hillside north of Bonner Springs. Eisenman was arrested in San Francisco last year after confessing a panicked, accidental hit-and-hide incident.
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad Co to issue 75,000 shares of its $5 par value common stock under an employee stock option plan. The action aids employee ownership and aligns incentives with company performance.
Sun blinded a young house wife whose small foreign sedan rammed a school bus near San Martin 20 miles south of San Jose. Thelma Pauline Shirley 22 died with her two children and mother in law. Highway Patrolman Leon Walters said no skid marks suggested she did not see the bus crossing the intersection.
In Kansas City a gunman robbed a east side grocery of about 1500 present plus 250 from cash register and fled. Police shot him in the left wrist and captured William Charles Gunter Jr after a short foot chase near a taxicab. Gunter had 1555 in an overnight case plus a gun and a gown and has a long prior record.
Ronald Dale Grove of Erie escaped serious injury when his 1951 Ford sedan skidded on US 59 east of Chanute and hit a rock bank one half mile east of the Big Creek bridge seven miles east of Chanute. Grove was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital for observation. Sheriff Sloan and Trooper Houck investigated.
An explosion at the Ohio Apex Division of Food Machinery in Nitro West Virginia caused a costly fire with two workers sustaining minor injuries. Manager Merlin Sims said damage could reach one million dollars, starting from a distillation unit blast at the plant.
In Geneva the Soviet Union and Western powers made no progress toward a Berlin accord in the five week conference. Western ministers fear collapse without an agreement or a summit. Khrushchev’s Budapest interview weakens hope for Moscow concessions while Gromyko traverses cautious replies on Berlin rights and access.
Lyle Donald Stover aged 25 a Chanute Kansas native died in a 120 foot fall from a grain elevator in Ogallah near Hays He had been living in Hays and worked for Roberts Construction Co of Sabetha on the elevator project Further details on residence and relatives in Chanute were not available.
Chanute residents will be informed in advance when the police traffic timer is in operation, according to Chanute Police Chief Lige Matlock. The timer's use follows a new policy to alert the public ahead of time.
AP reports Kansas traffic deaths in the state accident records for the last 24 hours ending 9 am today. To date in 1959 total deaths reach 207, compared with 194 in the comparable period of 1958. One fatality occurred previously.

City commission heard a union protest over Wea Constructors Paola regarding local labor use and wage scales on the new water treatment plant project. A meeting with Wea was requested as officials noted the contract requires local labor when available at prevailing rates.
In London Liberace accuses the Daily Mirror and columnist William Neil Connor of damaging his career by implying he is homosexual. He labels the insinuations as causing agony, ridicule, and professional harm while denying any deliberate sex appeal in performances.
Jess Fesler, 53, of Sunbright, was shot to death while operating a bulldozer on a federal flood control project near Lake City High School. Five men were questioned. investigators pursue motives beyond union tensions. Fesler faced past UMW wage claims and had a noted armed robbery link and alleged infidelity.
Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson accuses President Eisenhower and the GOP of misusing arguments about a sound dollar to push for a 1960 victory. Johnson says some banks held rate hikes back only due to Congress inertia while foes claim bipartisan restraint is needed to curb spending. Everett Dirksen and Charles Halleck rebut Johnson’s charges after a GOP chiefs meeting with Eisenhower.
Wichita police say Kenneth F. Keith 21 of Iola and Richard L Looney 19 of Independence were arrested early today after escaping from the Kansas State Industrial Farm at Hutchinson. A third escapee, Darrell Pittman 22 of Olathe, remains at large with the escape car missing. Keith and Looney were serving burglary and grand larceny terms respectively. Pittman faced no account check charges.
The district Scout court of honor for Chanute troops will be held at Central Park tomorrow at 7 30 PM. Eagle Palm awards will be presented to three Eagle Scouts by the Silver Beavers with Al Leverenz in charge. One Star and one Life pin plus many merit badges will be awarded. Rev Claude Pittenger will give the keynote address.
Two water safety films will be shown Friday afternoon at 2 o clock at the People's Theater courtesy of owner Ray Walsh. The Red Cross water safety chairman Mrs Kenneth Tebow said the films Teaching Johnny To Swim and Motors Boats and People will be followed by a question and answer period. Mrs Tebow urged all interested in water safety to attend and invited boat owners and Red Cross volunteers to assist.

Walter E. Carter 74 prominent in Missouri and national banking killed himself with a shotgun in his Carthage residence. He had been Bank of Carthage president since 1929 and held major roles in state and national banking groups. Sheriff ruled suicide. no inquest and no note. Surviving: wife Lacie Cassee Carter, two daughters Dr. Margaret Carter and Mrs Eugene McGaughey, a brother Max Carter, seven grandchildren, and nephew Rex Carter. Funeral plans incomplete.
