Pat Gorrell rescues a BB shot injured dove named Duffy from an alley and nurses it at home. After five days of care Duffy regains strength but Pat releases him to the wild while keeping a touch of memory by touching his leg.
Weather data shows temperatures around mid 60s to mid 50s with a mild forecast through Friday. Heavy rainfall hit southeast Kansas with Eureka recording 4.10 inches, Dexter 3.40 and other towns logging 2 to 3 inches. Verdigris River expected to rise sharply per forecaster Richard Garrett.
The Rev. Dean Baldwin will speak at an 8 p.m. centennial service at City Park SeKan-O-Rama stage with a Memorial building option if rain. The LeKan O Rama choir leads songs and old time gospel singing with piano by Mrs. William Hunt. The event marks Faith of Our Fathers Day opening Kansas state's weeklong centennial celebration.
Advance sale coupons can be exchanged for pageant tickets at centennial headquarters 118 E. Main or at the gate on performance nights. The pageant runs 8 30 p m Monday through Saturday at City Park with general admission reserved seating and patrons boxes. Tonight features another promenade from Lincoln and Main and a free street program before the centennial headquarters. Friday and Saturday offer Old Fashioned Bargain Days with merchant discounts centennial notices at multiple times and locations.
In Geneva the conference on Laos was indefinitely postponed by Britain citing apparent serious violations of the cease-fire. The U S boycott remains until Khrushchev fulfills a cease-fire condition. Malcolm MacDonald met Georghi Pushkin and said delegations from the United States Britain and France cannot attend further meetings until they consult their governments.
Connie Schleicher, 17, and Robert L. Rice, 16, were in a minor collision at Main and Evergreen around 8 15 last night. Schleicher's 1959 Chevrolet was rear ended, $20 damage, Rice's 1950 Chevrolet $50 damage. Rice was cited for reckless driving. hearing set for 4 p.m. next Thursday in police court.
Sixty leftist union leaders were arrested in Bolivia amid plans for a Castro-style revolution. They were sent to an internment camp as martial law was declared. A manifesto from Communist leaders praised the Cuban revolution. The government alleges miners would lead a march on La Paz and warns against communism. It cites an armed camp named The Friends of Cuba in Sacaba with Cuban Embassy involvement.
State architect James C. Canole ordered the Kansas Statehouse dome closed to visitors after finding rusted framing and deteriorated outriggers in the 304 foot high outer walkway. He emphasized the dome will not collapse but will remain shut for safety until repairs are completed.
A 17 year old girl and her companion Charles Gambrell were in a parked car when two or three Black men forced the girl from the vehicle and slashed Gambrell. The pair drove off. the girl later reached a farmhouse in shock. No injury details confirmed.
Elsie Livingstone 27, wife of Trooper Alfred Livingstone Jr., admitted to shooting her year old daughter Nancy Lou and wounding her son Alfred III and herself with her husband’s revolver. Both children and mother were injured or killed in West Milford, New Jersey. Nancy Lou died at the scene. Alfred III and Elsie were hospitalized in serious condition.
Harold Wink 38, a commercial electrician, was electrocuted about 3 p.m. yesterday at the Mid-America Refining Co. after contacting a short charged pole guy line. He was found on the switchhouse roof and died en route to Neosho Memorial Hospital. A native of Chanute, he lived in Parsons with wife Norma Jean Olson, whom he married last November. Surviving relatives include his mother and a sister. The funeral is set for Saturday at Johnson Mortuary with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Plans call for a Kansas Missouri Stateline Highway Association to push a super-highway from Kansas City to the Will Rogers Turnpike near the Oklahoma line between Baxter Springs and Joplin. Budgeted 1962 funds are tight. estimated cost ranges from 62 to 92 million.
Ottawa AP The United States agreed to allow an American firm to sell 10 grain suction pumps for two tankers carrying Canadian grain to Red China. Prime Minister John Diefenbaker praised the decision as an example to the world, saying it meets immediate needs despite a political backlash in Parliament. The pumps source was cited as an Ontario firm alternative.
Ottawa 16 year old Robert Cheney was seriously injured when a tractor drawn mower rolled over him on U S 59. He was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J R Cheney of Ottawa.
Washington AP report says the administration proposes federal scholarships to combat a rising shortage of doctors and scientists. The Health, Education and Welfare Department cites “almost prohibitive costs” of medical and dental education as a key cause.
The Chamber of Commerce agricultural promotion committee co sponsors a Neosho County Dairy Princess contest for National Dairy Month. Entry forms are from Floyd Potter and John DeMott. Contestants must be sponsored and meet age education and background criteria. The county winner will be announced June 27 at Tioga Hotel and advance to district Pittsburg June 30 with further progression to Hutchinson September 15 and national judging.
Tulsa hosts the 10th Skylady Derby as 18 planes depart with women pilots from Oklahoma Texas Missouri Kansas and Louisiana racing to Little Rock Springfield and back. The convention includes meetings and a banquet closing Saturday night.
Kansas wheat harvest expected to begin by Monday along the southern border from Caldwell Sumner County to Liberal Seward County. Barley harvest in the area is hindered by showers and damp weather as crews move in and demand is expected to rise.
Washington AP reports a chain of doctors will radio in to monitor the first U S astronaut in orbit. They will track pulse heart and other reactions and can recommend ending the flight if trouble arises. Maj Gen Neiss and Col Marchbanks outline the plan. Marchbanks is among 20 armed services and Public Health Service doctors who will make radio diagnoses of the astronaut's condition.
Defense secretary McNamara asked Congress for more than $2 billion to shore up existing alliances and bolster internal security of allies and neutrals. He told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that external aggression and domestic weaknesses require major funding for the Near and Far East and for easing restrictions on aiding Latin American nations.
Republican leaders urge Kennedy to set a time limit on Geneva nuclear testing talks and notify the Soviet Union. Dirksen and Halleck call for strong leadership and cite Eisenhower era showdowns in Iran, Lebanon, Quemoy Matsu and other areas. Miller attends GOP breakfast briefing.
Gus Hall, general secretary of the Communist party in the United States, said the party would not comply with the Supreme Court ruling requiring registration as an arm of a foreign power. He warned the decision asks the party to “death by own action” and stated officers would rather face jail than disclose names. The court mandated registration under the Internal Security Act of 1950, listing members, officers, and financial records.
