Killer Satellite System Studied by U S Defense
The Defense Department will study feasibility of a satellite intercept and destruction system able to target hostile space vehicles. The Air Force asked industry on May 2 to submit proposals, with at least three firms to conduct competitive studies. If funded, testing could begin next year for a 1975 or 1976 launch, with potential use of a laser or other means to disable or destroy enemy satellites. The Soviet Union has demonstrated space weapons, including Cosmos intercept tests and the controversial FOBS system, while the United States previously explored Saint and Johnson Island concepts.
