Topeka Death Of Divorcee Still Mystery

Daphne Rhodes a 26 year old New York socialite and former divorcee was found murdered in her Topeka apartment after leaving the Menninger Foundation. Investigators described sexual assault, strangulation, and a possible sex maniac motive with bruises and a knotted bra strap. Her autopsy indicated death about 90 minutes after a meal.

Harbold Held After Break-in at Owl Drive-in Tavern

Donald R. Harbold, 22, of 1319 S Highland was charged with breaking and entering after police found a kicked in back door at the Owl Drive-in. He resisted entry briefly but was taken into custody for allegedly transferring beer from a cooler into a cardboard case. Harbold claimed to be an employee of the tavern license holder Leona Gibson, whose license was issued a week earlier. Harbold has a prior police record and is a former resident of Girard and Liberal, Kansas.

County Youth Council discussed teen recreation and employment in Wilson County. They approved two projects: support for a county drag strip and creation of a teenage employment agency. Man Pleads Guilty To Theft by Deceit

Kans City AP report says 28 year old Jack Lee Musgrave feigned injuries in stores and taxis to collect damages. Assistant prosecutor J Arnot Hill said seven falls yielded 735 dollars from five claims. two claims are pending. Musgrave pleaded guilty to theft by deceit in Circuit Court and received one year in jail with a two year parole term.

Chanute Board OKs Three Teacher Contracts and Library Upgrades

Chanute school board approves three teaching contracts for Ishing the Senior High and Junior College as part of a three year plan. The work includes remodeling the high school library with new chairs desks and floor and a coin-plate facelift. Estimated total plan cost 6185 with 2000 budgeted annually for chairs and a range of chair types priced from 8 to 12 dollars. Welfare Advisory Group examines county farm near Erie

Twenty five members of the Welfare Advisory Group reviewed the Neosho County farm east of Erie. They endorsed a two mill levy proposal for building a new home and the sale of 135 acres with 10 acres set aside for a building site. The plan targets a 25 bed minimum with funds from a $120000 levy plus $15000 from land sale, aiming for a November election. Public viewing of the facility was invited. the next meeting is Sept 4.

Swim Classes Deadline Tomorrow

Bonn reports Heinrich Knappstein will become West German ambassador in Washington next fall. The 56 year old, currently chief West German observer at the United Nations, will replace Wilhelm Grewe, recalled amid the US West German clash over Berlin settlement proposals.
