Left Hand Police last month answered 163 calls for service up three from April while arrests dropped from 32 to 29. May totals include 20 arrests with 17 intoxication, 3 DWI, 5 other traffic violations. 3 non traffic misdemeanors and 1 felony. Bonds in May were 567, total for five months at 2743.88.
Sheriff Lee Montgomery reports two break ins in Stark and Erie last night. At the Virgil Mix general store in Stark an incomplete inventory shows candy and cigarettes taken. In Erie the Duccy elevator lost about $20 in change and the till drawer. entry was via forced doors. Under sheriff Jack Reynolds assisted.
A 1952 Ford pickup towed toward Chanute burned along with about 1000 dollars of tools after its tow hitch failed and it struck an electric pole on highway K39 near the municipal airport. The driver, Lester R Cox 33 of Fredonia, was en route to a Missouri job. Firefighters extinguished the flames as police aided at the scene.
The annual meeting will be held at 8 p m Friday in the Buffalo High School auditorium. Walter Steele reports progress on the new school building north of the US 75 and K39 junction with roof deck work to begin soon. A board member will be elected treasurer, replacing Delmar Miley.
Dixie Lee Donaldson a 15 year old from Quenemo Kansas was killed in a single car accident last night on a country road about two miles south of Pomona Ottawa area authorities said the victim was identified by the county sheriff and a preliminary report cited driver error as the cause.

Two pack a day smokers have 64 times greater lung cancer risk than nonsmokers. Ex smokers cut risk. John Hill six months old suffocated yesterday when his crib partially collapsed and trapped his head between the mattress and headboard. Parents James J. Hill and his wife, with four other children, reported the accident.

Douglas D. Mitchell six year old at Hutchinson drowned in the deep section of a swimming pool yesterday while his mother believed he played in the shallow area. Mrs. Dollie Tucker said the boy left the bathhouse before she and her other son were ready to enter the pool and was not seen until a swimmer found his body about 30 minutes later.
Kansas City report: The Plasterers Union and the Builders Association sealed a three year pact with wage increases. Current rate is 3.3742 dollars per hour, rising 12 percent each year to 3.75 after April 1, 1959. Painters and carpenters remain without contracts after their strike continues.

Harry Heckethorn Jr., 31, of McPherson, elected head football coach and will teach physical sciences at Senior High School. He played football at McPherson College and graduated in 1950 with an AB degree. He replaces Noah Allen who left for New Mexico A&M. The board also hired Robert Herman as mathematics instructor and science teacher at the junior college and high school, replacing Keith Maring who moved to Wentworth Military Academy.
The Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee announced a new deadline of June 10 to dispose of excess wheat or grain cover crops on designated acreage reserves. Farmers in the county must submit written extension requests at the ASC office.
An 11 year old boy admitted starting about half a dozen fires in Junction City over recent weeks. Sheriff Vance Collins said the youth, whose name is withheld, will face a juvenile court hearing Friday. The arrest followed simultaneous fires at a flower shop and a four car garage Sunday night, with other small fires in two grocery stores reported.
