Erie reports warn hog producers that high temperatures reduce feed efficiency. A California test showed 100 lb hogs used 255 lb feed at 70 F but 460 lb at 90 F for 100 lb pork, an ~80 percent increase. Suggestions include shade 12–14 sq ft per hog, a 16–20 ft wide shed, fog cooling with 1–2 gal/hr nozzles, line screens, thermostatic controls at 75 F, or alternative wallows 4–12 in deep with 2 sq ft per hog and proper drainage.
