Voters in Neosho County weigh unification of school districts in two districts. By noon 110 cast ballots at Chanute sites Alcott and Murray Hill report 32 and 78 votes respectively. Polls run 7 am to 7 pm with two districts forming Chanute area and the rest of the county.

Barnard Wins Twice At Toastmasters Club

Dick Barnard won two awards at the Chanute Toastmasters meeting last night earning most improved speaker and the Boner award. He tied with Royce Wells for best speaker of the evening as Bill Lee Lige Matlock and R J Hayes spoke. Topicmaster Jim Boerwinkle had members tape stories or jokes and play them back. Toastmaster Wayne Smith led the session with invocation by Harry Patterson and president Bob Wilson presiding.

Three Hurt As Car Runs Off Road Near Santa Fe Park

Fire Chief C W Brennan reported Chanute's May fire loss at about 1500 dollars, bringing the five month total to 3325. The May 1963 period logged 7770 dollars for comparison. The department handled sixteen runs including seven residential alarms and several vehicle and gas incidents.

Floyd Swiler Found Dead in His Car

Floyd Swiler of 514 N Evergreen was found dead in his car in the garage at his Chanute home yesterday around 5 30 pm. Police said he took his own life with a hose connected to the exhaust while the car ran. Neighbors summoned authorities as Swiler, a longtime Chanute resident, had owned a liquor store and operated cafes. Funeral arrangements were incomplete with Koch Skinner Memorial Home handling.

Foodtown Grand Event Opens New Supermarket

The grand opening of the Foodtown Supermarket at Main and Lafayette runs tomorrow through the weekend. The store replaces the old Main and Grant location and features 12,000 square feet, air conditioning, fluorescent lighting, an incinerator, modern meat department equipment, and a delicatessen. Parking for 100 cars and a local payroll near 80,000 yearly support Chanute’s economy.
