Fire Chief C W Brennan reports Chanute has logged 89 fires to date with losses of 5053 dollars, up from 72 fires and 4169 dollars in 1955. Total for May includes 13 fires causing 1125 dollars in damage, while Altoona’s Verdigris River nears bankfull from recent rains.
Muriel Greer 23 of Paragould Arkansas, who escaped May 5 from Missouri State Prison, was seen fleeing after deputies stopped a service station car near Bartlesville Oklahoma. He ditched the car, fled into woods, and removed cuff keys. Nearly three dozen officers from Oklahoma and Kansas with two airplanes and bloodhounds joined the search. He had served seven months of a two year burglary and larceny sentence in Jefferson City Missouri.
Washington reports farm product prices have climbed 8 percent over five months and 3 percent from mid-April to mid-May. The Agriculture Department notes meat prices led the gain, while costs rose about 0.75 percent as livestock production tightens. Democrats attack farm policy, predicting Belt gains. Republicans welcome the trend.
Gov. Fred Hall voiced full support for the Kansas Veterans Commission at the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars encampment. He pledged veteran preference in civil service and executive appointments, noted reform of the Kansas National Guard, and highlighted a 10 million dollar construction program for guard facilities three quarters finished.
Charles Offner of McCook Nebraska, 55, was killed when his car left a county road south of Colby and plunged into a water filled ravine after going over a cliff on a county road.
Two masked gunmen killed Thomas Dombrowski editor of Glos Ludowy and Frank Grodzki in a Polonia Social Club raid last night. Police hunt criminals known for card game robberies while Walter Nogas, wounded, is questioned at Bellevue Hospital. Dombrowski’s paper had faced a ban by Detroit officials.
Sen. Mansfield accused the administration of offering outworn clichés instead of facts on foreign policy and said the Soviet Union is making positive moves while the United States reacts late. Sen. Aiken supported Eisenhower’s line and called the record strong, as Mansfield urged Americans be informed of real conditions. Judd criticized alleged pro-Communists influencing higher policy in State and Defense.
A Denver couple died and three family members were critically injured in a US 24 crash seven miles west of Goodland. Everett Fesler 53 and his wife about 50 were killed when the car sideswiped a bridge. Betty June Foster and two Wills children Robbie 1 Randy 3 were in critical condition. The group was returning to Colorado after Memorial Day visit at Palco Kas.
About 100 registered for opening sessions of the state meeting of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen and its women's society. A 6 30 p m dinner at the Masonic Temple followed by drill team exhibitions and a dance are planned with Ray Tudor of Cleveland to speak. Attendance may reach 150 as sessions split between Civic Center and Odd Fellows Hall. Durward Dawson presided. Mayor Lightfoot and Mrs. Bert Hargrove heads spoke and welcomed attendees.
Wayne L. Morris, 26, was shot and killed early today at his father in law Lloyd L. Cairns Sr.’s home after Morris broke down a door following a peace disturbance arrest. Cairns said Morris advanced on him and was shot once with a .22 rifle near the heart. The shooting stemmed from marital troubles with Morris and his wife Mildred. Cairns is held in Cowley County Jail with no charges filed yet.
A 160 foot toll bridge span collapsed into the Mississippi River at Muscatine early today. Truck driver William Wheatcraft, 26, of Mansfield Ohio, jumped clear. another driver Jim Haynes, 30, of Streator Illinois, was left stranded as wheels hung off a remaining pier. Police chased a speeding car about an hour before the collapse. cause not yet determined.
The Southern Baptist Convention approved by a large vote its stance that local churches are autonomous while avoiding disavowing a North Carolina Supreme Court ruling that places church property control with a minority. Britain clarifies Middle East plan but rejects major Arab objections as Ahmed Shukairy vows continued resistance. Senate pair lambaste military waste over new facilities while idle Navy plant at Pocatello is cited as example.
About 500 people toured the new Professional Building at 10 S Steuben during an open house from 3 to 8 p.m. yesterday. Owners reported full representation from all occupying firms and positive public response to the event.
Enrollment for the first of two six week summer terms at Emporia State College will be held Monday. Registrar Dr. Harry Waters announced the schedule.
Polio cases rose to 112 last week, up 27 from 85 but below the 240 seen in the 1955 week and far under the 144 of the 1952 comparison. A Public Health Service spokesman said it is too early to predict the full polio season.
Undersecretary of State Herbert Hoover Jr told an Interstate Oil Compact Commission meeting that the United States will probably need to import appreciable quantities of oil in the coming years. He urged a policy encouraging domestic exploration while recognizing future imports from friendly countries. 1955 domestic production peaked at 6.8 million barrels daily with demand over 7.5 million, leaving a gap met by imports just under 800,000 barrels per day. The commission noted 194 billion barrels of known oil may never be recovered.
An oil well explosion near Kellyville killed William E. McBride, 49, of Tulsa, and injured 11 others. Dowell Inc. employees were handling a perforating gun when it blew, shattering casing. the cause is under investigation. The Bowden No. 1 well is owned by R. K. Cattlett of Kellyville.
A one car accident eleven miles south of Wellington on U S Highway 81 killed Jacqueline Sue Deer Inwater and Dona June Creed, age 42 months, daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Creed of South Haven Kansas. The mother and driver Mrs Don Creed was listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
Martha Villepigue, long time Women’s Page editor of The Tribune, will retire Saturday after almost nine years in the role. She recalls memorable interviews with figures like Mrs. Georgia Neese Clark Gray and Gladys Swarthout, plans to write fiction and compete in contests, and will visit family and friends in Washington and California before settling into new activities.
State Highway Director Frank E. Harwi Jr rejects claims Gov. Hall junked the 1949 highway program. He cites a 26 percent 1955 gain above prior yearly averages and says planning proceeds a year ahead with wide state emphasis, not favoritism, under Hall’s direction.
A B25 air force plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Lowry Air Force Base while en route from Tacoma to Panama City. Four airmen were killed, four others injured and rushed to hospital. the craft had stopped at Lowry to refuel. The crash occurred near a cemetery about a mile south of the runways after an emergency landing was requested.
A motorcyclist Edwin Keith Hastings 16 Neodesha died after a collision with a car driven by L L Vrooman Independence on U S Highway 75 near the north city limits. The crash occurred as the car was turning left off the highway.

State Highway Commission let multiple southeast Kansas highway jobs with Freete Construction Co. of Pittsburg the apparent low bidder on 3.7 miles of light surfacing for the K39 relocation near Chanute. Dwight Haworth of Ottawa led on the Coffeyville project with a bid of 375,365.47. Other low bids included Stannard Construction for a 4.5 mile relocation on US 169, Sutton Landscape for seeding, and multiple county road improvements across Woodson, Neodesha, Bourbon, and Linn counties with bids ranging from about 8,041 to 437,575 dollars.
New York reports Revlon plans a summer start for The Most Beautiful Girl in the World a weekly competition to be judged on talent dancing singing acting and intelligence with a final annual prize of 250000. George Abrams Revlon advertising director says network and time will be chosen soon. Revlon already sponsors The $64,000 Question and The $64,000 Challenge on CBS TV.
The bodies of William Jerome Hogeland, 57, and M. H. Robbins, 61, were recovered from the Praco mine after an underground explosion. Rescue crews faced rock falls and water as 127 other miners escaped unharmed or with minor injuries.
Wichita city commissioners approved on first reading a one mill levy to raise about 270000 dollars per year for planning and building a new city hall. The funds would cover site, planning, and construction for city administrative police and fire headquarters.
Fair weather continues with clearing skies after scattered showers. Tonight's low near 50 to 55 degrees, Saturday high in the 80s, and a general warming trend statewide. Record low readings were noted in Topeka and Manhattan as cool air persists.
In Dunstable England a Roman Catholic priest climbed a 20 foot fence at Whipshade Zoo and struck a lion with an iron bar to save a scout boy. The 11 year old Tony Murphy of London lost both arms and is in critical condition. The priest Rev Ronald Aylward led the scouts and defended the boy during the attack.
