Plastic seals cut silage losses at USDA Maryland tests
A two year study at a USDA center in Maryland found that covering silo surfaces with six mil thick black polyethylene reduces spoilage by about half and lowers seepage. Sealed silage produced more milk and cows lost less weight. Costing two to four cents per square foot, the cover can save around 150 dollars on a 100 by 20 trench silo, compared with plastic price and installation work.

Pipe Offers Varied Uses in Irrigation
FREDONIA gated and ungated pipe serves multiple irrigation roles. Dan Pherigo notes it distributes water from buried lines and head ditches and moves water from pumps across uneven terrain. Gated pipe can replace long ditches on sloped land, lowering initial costs and reducing needed structures, especially on newly irrigated land.

Swine efficiency rises with measured gain and feed use
Kansas swine station data show 100 pounds of pork required 299 to 334 pounds of feed depending on season and rank. Boars vary most within a breed, with efficiency ranging from 248 to 250 pounds of feed per 100 pounds gain. Researchers urge selecting for efficiency and balanced rations to minimize pork costs.

Low Moisture Silage Hints From Erie County Agent
Erie notes that low moisture silage is not a new miracle. Use gas tight silo, proper compaction, and airtight sealing. Cut hay when first buds, cure to 40 to 60 percent moisture, chop fine, and seal with plastic plus a high moisture top. Avoid leaks, feed after three weeks, and feed two to three inches daily. High moisture silage reduces appetite. low moisture offers no nutritive advantage over good quality hay.

Lawn Tests For Watering Explained By Experts
Erie content outlines two methods to tell if a lawn needs water. Note color change to grayish green and footprints in buffalo and velvet grasses. Soil moisture depth is tested with a rod. three to four inches of penetration suggests drying soil. An inch of water per irrigation is advised, timed by a coffee can. Mowing height influences root depth. 2 to 3 inch mowing yields stronger roots and less crab grass.

Color Cause Of Red Sorghum In Cold Soil
Red coloration in sorghum stems results from cold weather hindering phosphorus uptake and sugar to starch conversion. If conditions persist, Fusarium root and crown rot may develop, risking plant death. The remedy is to delay planting until soil temperatures stay at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Reports Due On Projects
Farmers who completed conservation projects under the 1963 ACP were urged to file performance reports for cost-share payments. Leon Choate, chair of the county ASCS committee, said early reporting speeds payments to cover project costs and help fund fall additions. If a practice cannot be carried out, notify the committee to approve another project for the farmer or others in the county.
