Little Cindy Cooper Crowned Water Carnival Princess

Cindy Cooper three years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Wayne Cooper was crowned Water Princess at the Munipal Swimming Pool during the 25th annual water carnival. About 700 spectators attended a program featuring clowns divers a water ballet and a style show of bathing suits. Winners in the swimming races were announced with multiple firsts and seconds in beginner intermediate and two division races. The crowning of Cindy Cooper closed the event with a beach ball necklace and crown.

Rattlesnake Foils Haying Incident Near Urbana

Two area youths Earl Wayne Hole and Larry Ingraham were working on the Roy Triplet farm south of Urbana when a rattlesnake coiled under a baler. Hole narrowly avoided injury as both men killed the three foot snake with hay hooks after hearing buzzing noises from beneath.

Heart Attack Fatal In Rugged Oregon Mountains

William J. Horner a 24 year old University of Kansas graduate from Libertyville Illinois died in the rugged mountains of northeastern Oregon. The coroner said he suffered a heart attack. Eighteen men working in shifts carried Horner from a wilderness area about 50 miles northwest of Baker after he collapsed last Monday.

Leavenworth Escapee Captured by FBI

Claude Monroe Hornback 40, who escaped from Leavenworth’s honor farm, was arrested by FBI agents after being spotted on a Kansas City street. He was serving a five year sentence for moving forged securities across state lines. Harold Norman Stewart, who fled with Hornback, surrendered earlier at the Platte County Missouri sheriff’s office.

Cattle Prices Steady In Replacement Sale at Kansas City

Prices held steady at the weekly replacement cattle sale at the Kansas City stockyards. Top price was 26.85 for 50 Hereford steers averaging 441 pounds. Calves under 500 pounds sold 22.10 to 26.60, yearlings 20.75 to 23.50, and feeders over 700 pounds 21.35 to 23.29. Receipts reached 1,300.

Two Escapees Recaptured by Erie Sheriff

Two escapees from the U S Disciplinary Barracks at Leavenworth were recaptured by Sheriff Jerry Sloan and Undersheriff George Neely in Erie. Gerald L. Cooke 23 Mt Pleasant Michigan and Paul E Bowerman 23 New Albany Indiana face terms for burglary larceny and AWOL. They fled Tuesday evening and were chased down in an alley after attempting to bolt.
