President Ford vetoes decontrol of old oil and a six month extension on controls as Congress plans to vote against gradual decontrol. Experts warn gasoline prices could rise seven to eleven cents per gallon by Labor Day if controls end August 31. Old oil, pre 1973, accounts for about 60 percent of production.
Two Soyuz cosmonauts Valeri Kubasov and Alexei Leonov landed in Kazakhstan after six days in space. They carried five US flags to mark the space meeting with three American astronauts. UPI reports their health as excellent and the landing described as a thumpdown.
Dr. Robert C. Harder says the U S Supreme Court decision restricting confinement of non dangerous individuals to mental hospitals will have little effect in Kansas. Kansas officials warn the ruling could influence future court challenges and patient rights while analysts discuss potential reforms and ombudsman needs.
A tentative two year pact between the U S Postal Service and unions representing about 600000 workers was reached just after the Sunday deadline preventing a nationwide strike. Wages will rise under the agreement with ratification to take about a month. The deal preserves a no layoff guarantee while cost of living raises and higher mail prices are anticipated this year.
United Press International reports Egypt and Israel near a three year peace pact supervised by the United States. Cairo and Jerusalem discuss withdrawal from Sinai passes, oil fields, renewed UN mandate, and US electronic monitoring. Sadat meets leaders as Kissinger may return to the region.
A federal grand jury indicted Bunge Corp of New York and 13 current or former executives and employees on charges of conspiring to steal export grain and defraud the U S Department of Agriculture. The scheme reportedly ran 1961 to 1973, involving shortweighting at export elevators in Destrehan Louisiana and Galveston Texas.
