Lawrence Kansas AP reports 6 foot 7 forward Drew Rogers of Kirkwood Missouri signed a national scholarship with the University of Kansas. Rogers averaged 17.9 points and 13 rebounds his senior year as his team went 31 1 and reached the state title game before losing to Baytown South.
Hans beat Dairy Queen 11-5 and UCT beat Kustom Electronics 7-4 as Hans and UCT advance in the VFW Minor League tournament. Barnby homered for Hans with Yakle Reed Gehrt on the mound. Dairy Queen’s Byers Madill also pitched.
Ash Grove Cement’s Greg Christiansen and Bernie Alonzo combined for a two hit shutout as Ash Grove won 6 to 0 over Mid-America Refining in VFW Major League play. Ash Grove improves to 9 5, Mid-America falls to 2 12. Home Savings defeats First National Bank 3 to 1 with a first inning run and two in the second. First National’s lone run comes in the bottom of the second.
Two games ignite the Chanute Church Softball League fast pitch division as the season starts tonight. The event marks the debut of the tourney with teams eager for early wins and local support.
Koch Furniture defeated Wrestler Boats and Motors 9-3 to win the VFW Rookie League title. Doug Uden pitched to a 3-0 lead, Wrestler narrowed to 3-2, then Koch added five runs in the fifth to secure the championship as Wrestler managed only one hit by Robbie Dicker.
