Mrs. Ted Gorrell left a foil wrapped roast on the grill while she talked on the phone. The roast vanished leaving only hot charcoal as neighbors speculated a vagabond or stray dog or even a hungry tramp took the meal. A man exhibited an unusual two tailed earthworm later on.
Barbara Gibson, 20, daughter of Loyd and Geneva Gibson of Galesburg, chosen queen of the Erie centennial and Soldiers reunion. Attendants include Nancy Dunham and Patricia Rash, with six finalists named by judges. The coronation, bean feed on courthouse lawn with Gov. John Anderson speaking, and dances at Legion hall cap a weekend of events.
About 50 members of a minority group at First Baptist Church Wichita found the doors locked when trying to hold prayer Thursday night. They held a brief service in an alley as Dr. Lewis Jacobsen preached from a fire escape.
Forecasters report cloudy cool conditions with possible thunderstorms tonight and a warmer Saturday with mid 80s highs. Kansas saw renewed rain Thursday into Friday, western areas hit hardest, with highs in the 80s to 90s and lows in the 60s. hail fell in Dodge City and showers continued in western and southern sections.
Teen baseball games scheduled tonight have been postponed because of wet grounds. Officials announced the cancellations to keep players safe and ensure field conditions improve for tomorrow's doubleheader.
One man died and two others were injured when two cars collided about 20 miles west of Topeka on U S 40. Carol O Peters 23 of Topeka was killed driving one car. One vehicle burned. the other demolished. An injured person was taken to Forbes Air Force Base Hospital in serious condition. The other injured was taken to a Topeka hospital.
TOPEKA AP S. Sgt. Robert C Garst Forbes Air Force Base suffered first and second degree burns Thursday while performing maintenance on a KC97 fuel tanker. Officials said a lightning strike apparently hit the aircraft. the plane appeared undamaged.
AP reports Washburn Municipal University Board of Regents approved a proposed rec ord budget of 2.5 million dollars for the 1962 fiscal year on Thursday.
Detroit AP report. Chrysler Corp angered the UAW by proposing wage reductions for future hires at six defense plants in Warren and Sterling Township Michigan Newark Delaware Scranton Pennsylvania Huntsville Alabama and Cocoa Beach Florida. The plan targets starting salaries for office and engineering staff while a GM pension proposal seeks higher benefits and optional retirement at 60 as bargaining continues with Ford. The UAW notes wage cuts threaten decades of gains for equal pay for equal work. A GM demand for higher pension levels follows Ford’s earlier request. The talks enter a critical phase with the risk of a strike if not resolved by end of next month.
Glenice Neptune of Fredonia was crowned queen of the Wilson County centennial at a high school ceremony opening a three day observance. Attendants Jean Head and Martha Cook were chosen, along with eight Miss Centennial candidates from eight county towns.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk denounces Khrushchev's calls to overhaul the United Nations and warns the United States would veto any troika plan. Rusk says most members already reject the proposal while Kennedy approves the stance.
City Manager R. J. Hayes announced the sale of one decommissioned fire truck to the Topeka Shrine Club for 215 dollars. The 1931 Sea grave ladder truck will join the club, which planned to drive it to Topeka. The second truck, known as Old Possum, is reportedly sold to the Chanute Jaycees but delivery has not occurred. Only two bids were received, one per truck, with sale authorized months earlier by the city commission.
Granada Hills California story notes Bruce Kremen vanished July 21 1960 during a YMCA hike in Angeles National Forest. Parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Kremen hold to hope of his return despite 11 day and ongoing search efforts involving volunteers and sheriff's juvenile bureau. Forest spans 691052 acres.
The Kansas City engineers reviewed a completed feasibility report on a possible power interconnection among Chanute and five towns in the Kansas Municipal Power Pool. Attendees included Chanute officials and representatives from Kansas City Kansas Ottawa Iola Erie and Coffeyville. No major decisions were made. towns will study the report and reconvene.
Fire yesterday destroyed the A. F. Berthot farm barn near Chanute, burning 20 to 25 tons of hay and a 1958 Chevrolet. Firemen attacked the blaze after a 2:40 call, abandoning the car as the roof collapsed. Investigators cited an intentional grass burn as the likely cause.
Iowa Highway Patrolman Robert H. Wilke 31 claims an abduction hoax after being suspended and charged with embezzlement. a woman Nancy Grubbs 49 of Chariton is charged with conspiracy. Wilke's suspect tale and car thefts trigger a large manhunt and court arraignment in Chariton.
The Senate passed a $570 million water pollution control bill sending it to President Kennedy. The measure, backed by Kennedy, would raise federal grants to states from 50 million to 100 million annually by 1964 to help ensure a pure water supply.
A Tribune classified reader reports selling art lessons within an hour of the June 21 issue. The ad placement apparently spurred quick interest in twelve metropolitan painting seminars offered by the Book-of-Mouth Club.
