Five Die in Kansas City Traffic Crash After Police Chase
A speeding car fleeing a police stop crashed into a second auto at a Kansas City intersection, killing five. The fleeing driver Charles Schwancke, 23, of Kansas City died. four others in the second car, Luther Thompson 22 of Suffolk Virginia James Fuller 23 and Donald Ewing 26 and Robert Reed 26 all of Kansas City per Sgt John Allen. The chase began when Patrolman Bobby Austin tried to stop Schwancke for a routine check around 2 am. Schwancke had a suspended license and was speeding about 70 mph on 27th Street. The wreck happened in a mixed business residential area in the city’s eastern section.

Gas spill leads to arrest in Fredonia thefts
A five gallon gas can toppled in a parked car caused gasoline to run onto the street at 301 E Main leading to the arrest of Floyd Watkins 20 of Fredonia. Officers found two gas cans and hose then learned Watkins confessed to stealing fuel from two combines at a nearby John Deere agency. Watkins was turned over to Wilson County Sheriff M B Cunningham. Two Chanute youths were released.
