Ralph O. Brownfield a former Air Force brigadier general and Republican candidate for U S congressman in the Fifth Kansas district visited Chanute yesterday to drum up support. He traveled with his wife and then proceeded to Humboldt and Tola visiting friends and making new acquaintances.
Presidential press secretary Pierre Salinger flies to Brazil to coordinate a three day visit by President Kennedy and his wife starting July 30.
Partly cloudy skies with possible isolated thunderstorms tonight through Friday in Kansas. Highs near 90 today, 84 to 93 Wednesday, lows 65 to 70. A fast squall line Wednesday caused rains across eastern and central areas and a tornado near Lecompton. Rain totals varied from Centra lia 1.90 to La Cygne 1.11 inches.
The biggest federal tax cut since 1954 took effect, aimed at speeding growth with $1.5 billion in relief. Businesses, railroads, steel and paper producers gain large depreciation deductions to spur new investment and higher orders, despite a predicted deficit in the 1963 fiscal year.
Chanute school board signed a 1962-63 budget plan raising the levy to 39.087 mills after deleting a $50,000 land purchase item. The budget calls for $950,853.83 in expenditures with a $20,000 net new funds need, supported by state aid and a $33,000 cash carryover. The board chose to convert the special building fund to bonds rather than seek immediate land purchase, delaying tax commission approval and possibly adding two mills to next year’s general budget. The valuation dropped to $11,872,000, with a budget hearing set for August 6 at 8 p.m.
The McDaniels pony team of Walnut won the Erie pull with 225 percent of its weight, covering two feet seven and a half inches. Bud McGown of Erie runner up, with 225 percent of his team weight at two feet four and three quarters inches. Top five also included Walter Nutter and Leon Singmaster of Fort Scott, and Carl Kuntz of Altoona. A large crowd attended the event as week long Erie celebration continues with 4 H square dance tonight and a bean feed tomorrow morning.

Telstar satellite ready for a second first as a transatlantic telephone call between New York and Paris is planned for 5 to 6 p m EST. Eugene J McNeely of AT&T will speak from New York while European programs are broadcast to the United States.
The Senate Finance Committee approved a 1.0 billion tax credit to modernize U.S. plants and equipment and kept it in the tax revision bill. Chairman Byrd opposed the credit but supported its retention amid continued work on foreign earnings provisions and potential further changes.
Former Missouri governor James Z Blair and his wife were found dead at their west Jefferson City home. Authorities say a running car in the attached garage released deadly carbon monoxide that filled the house. A maid reported arriving to work and could not enter. Their dog also died in the residence. Sheriff Horace Debo indicated the incident appears to be a gas poisoning.
Mrs Theodosia Bear, a longtime La Harpe resident, died Wednesday night at age 105. Her death marks the passing of a local woman who witnessed a century of community history. A funeral service details were not available at press time.
