Safari Museum honors Martin Johnson and Osa in Chanute

Mrs. Freda Cripps Cripps of Albany California sister of the late Martin Johnson visited Chanute for the Safari Museum dedication honoring Martin and Osa Johnson. She thanked all who funded and built the museum and sent items for display. A coyote sighting near Chanute amused farmer Roy Phobus as coyotes predate on field rats. Dr Henry K Baker spoke on mental health at the Optimist club breakfast. A man in a undershirt and eyeglasses walked past the Silver Grill during the talk. Minor League games Penney's vs Nation's and Self Service vs Evans Music were stopped by darkness. four innings counted as official.

Exact Cause Of Jetliner Crash Sought Near Denver

Federal investigators probed the United Airlines Flight 859 crash near Denver seeking the exact cause after the DC-8 veered from the runway and exploded in flames. Mental Health Offered Use of Hospital

Neosho Memorial Hospital extended meeting and conference rooms to the Neosho County Mental Health Assn and offered clinical facilities for the mental health program as needed. Robert Geiger, president of the Neosho Mental Health Assn., attended to discuss needs and hospital aid. Board members plan an inspection of the obstetrics and patient wings with completion expected in August and a public open house scheduled.

Pasture Fire Burns on Wester Robison Farm

An extensive pasture fire burned yesterday evening at the Wester Robison farm six miles west of the airport. Neighbors Ralph Winterrowd and Joe Adelgren helped extinguish the blaze with water soaked sacks after a lengthy battle starting around 5 30 p m. Cause is unknown. Mary Busby was not home.

Dr. Pao-shu Chen Joins Medical Staff At TB Hospital

Dr. Pao-shu Chen joined the Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital medical staff on July 1, succeeding Dr. Yong W. Kim who resigned to work at Gelvin Haughey Clinic in Concordia. A 57 year old Chinese national, he studied at Peking Union Medical College and held posts in Shanghai and Formosa before joining Topeka State Hospital in 1957. He lives at 319 N. Grant.

Ashley Heads United Fund in Chanute election

Richard Ashley was elected president of Chanute United Fund Inc at a Bank of Commerce meeting. Eliza beth Pieper and Bill Young were named first and second vice presidents, with William Gray Jr as treasurer and Mrs. Coleen Ikenberry secretary of the board. Joseph Lewis chairs the budget committee and a large board of directors was elected.

Erie Centennial Parade Opens Reunion Night

In Erie the Soldiers and Sailors Reunion continues with a 5 PM parade, saddle club performances, and square dancing. A 40 square dance contest starts at 8 PM, followed by a street dance at 9. The centennial queen selection is planned for tomorrow.

Altoona hosts a three day Wilson County centennial with eight queen candidates from county towns and a coronation by Mayor William F. Hansen at 9 p m after the 4 H style revue. Tug of war contests lead Friday events followed by parades, races, contests, and band performances through Saturday.

Four Chanute youths implicated in mailbox damage

Police say four Chanute teen boys damaged government mail boxes at 9th and Highland and 11th and Evergreen with illegal firecrackers Monday night. Three of the four admitted participation. ages given as 19, 18, 17, and 14. The case involving the three older youths was referred to postal authorities. the younger is under juvenile jurisdiction.

Christy waives hearing in burglary case bound over

Lyle Christy formerly of Chainute and Humboldt waived preliminary hearing in city court on burglary and larceny charges and was bound over to district court with bond set at 1500 dollars. He is tied to a chain saw theft from John Erickson farm northwest of here. A juvenile court hearing for a 15 year old Chainute boy involved granted conditional parole to leave state pending employment confirmation.

Weather outlook and Kansas rainfall report

In Topeka and Kansas, rain fell heavily across western and north central areas with severe weather and hail. Tornado clouds were spotted near Natoma Dorrance and Dodge City but no tornado damage reported. Jewell received 1.83 inches of rain as four inches fell just east of town. Forecast calls for partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight and Thursday with highs 80 to 85 and lows 40 to 65.

The United States launched the Midas III satellite into a 1,850 mile high polar orbit, the first U S missile alarm orbit to pass over Russia. The craft carries an infrared eye to detect missile exhaust and aims to provide near instant warnings alongside radar and computer systems.

Kansan Missouri towns organize protest against gas rate rise

A Kansas City meeting formed a protest board against Cities Service Gas Co. rate hikes filed with the Federal Power Commission. Otto A. Blume, a Missouri farmer in his 60s, defies federal marshals who moved him off his farm then leveled the condemned portion. He returned to live in a truck on high ground near the Pomine de Terre reservoir and warned the government wants lakefront property. He said he wrote Kennedy, Kennedy, and Rep. Morgan M. Moulder claiming entitlement to every inch of shoreline.

Korean Dam Break Kills 114, 13 Missing

The Korean Red Cross reported 114 killed and 13 missing after a dam burst near Namwon south of Seoul. About 220 houses were washed away and 203 destroyed as floods from days of heavy rain hit a 20,000 person community. Two villages flooded when Seback Myun reservoir waters spilled through an irrigation dam.

$1000 Loss In Farm Fire Near Chanute

The Glen Neely farm on Shaw road southeast of Chanute suffered a $1000 fire loss. A box car with tools and riding gear burned. a Dodge truck nearby was scorched and a barn was at risk. Mary Neely, 13, credited the Chanute fire department for saving the barn as firefighters arrived at 2:48 pm.

Topeka Man Detained After Stripping in Public

A Topeka man was taken into custody by police at Lincoln and Main around 7 a.m. after he stripped and discarded his clothes along a route from 15 N. Grant. Officers noted a history of mental illness, he was examined by a physician and later released to relatives from Topeka. Wasser for Insurance. HE 19530.

Kashmir not top topic as Ayub and Kennedy focus on economy

In Washington Ayub Khan and John F Kennedy set Kashmir aside for now and pledged U S scientific help to combat soil salinity affecting 27 million acres in Pakistan. Salinger said a team of U S scientists will study the salinity and aid efforts to restore fertility while Kashmir to be raised at a later meeting.
