National American Legion commander Preston Moore told about 100 Chanute attendees that Russia has the offensive and the U S the defensive. He urged a strong offensive, including propaganda and trade, to defeat communism and warned against complacency and prison camps.
Willie Mays hit a pivotal three bagger sending Hank Aaron home as the National League rallied in the eighth to beat the American League 5-4 at Forbes Field. The rally followed a three-run burst by the AL and featured Whitey Ford on the mound for the AL and Elroy Face for the NL.
The Chanute Chamber of Commerce plans a large turnout for the John Redmond dam ground breaking on July 18 at Burlington. A motor caravan to the event is likely, with City Manager Hays urging universal participation to share river benefits. Industrial committee chair Kenneth Brown notes building for tenants as key to progress, while a Thursday meeting will discuss improving the business climate. An Oklahoma man Karol T. Clodfelter from Tulsa pleaded guilty in a St. Paul justice court to illegal liquor transportation and license tag use. He was fined 50 for the transport 15 for the tag and 200 Kansas liquor tax plus 5 court costs. The cargo totaling about 750 pints 250 half pints and 70 fifths was turned over to Erie sheriff for later public auction with proceeds to the county school fund. He was arrested by Trooper R L White at US 169 and Shaw Road and released after paying fines.
Howard York, accused in the stabbing death of Caldwell Culton, was bound over to the district court in Chanute on a first degree murder charge. He was transferred to Erie County Jail to await trial and not bailed. Witnesses included Dr. J. D. Gough Dr. H. F. Swain Chief Lige Matlock Eli Graves and Hazel Holt.
Chicago reports final Independence Day weekend death toll at 520. Among them 276 fatalities from traffic accidents and 179 drownings, with 65 other deaths from miscellaneous accidents between 6 p.m. Friday and midnight Sunday. Traffic deaths were 74 below the Safety Council forecast of 350, compared with 310 highway deaths during Memorial Day weekend.

Chanute board of education approved a 1959 60 budget totaling 768 331 11 with a proposed 34 62 mill levy down from 33 08 due to lower valuations. Superintendent Fisher cited salary increases and a valuation drop to 11 3 million reducing net tax impact to about one mill.
Four county agents forecast a strong row crop year following recent rains. Wheat, barley and oats harvests near completion in Neosho Wilson and Woodson with below average yields. Neosho County’s wheat around 22 23 bu acre, oats variable, barley near average. Wilson County reports early seed bed work after rains. harvest largely finished before precipitation. Area farmers eye hoped for moisture to fill corn ears. general crop outlook remains positive despite past grain losses.
Forty hours after four armed inmates seized hostages at the Monroe reformatory, a tear gas raid at 4.03 a.m. freed 38 captives unharmed. Officials praised the operation as precise and orderly, with guards and staff guiding visitors and inmates to safety.
A Rowan farm barn near High Prairie church burned taking 100 tons of hay and over 1000 board feet of walnut lumber. Neighbors pulled a hay stack from the blaze with a cable while Chanute agreed to a special charge for the response. The call came at 2 10 pm and the truck returned at 4 30 pm.
Skies were clear to partly cloudy in Kansas with a heavy midnight downpour in Garden City totaling 3.25 inches. Substantial rainfall occurred in northwest Kansas with figures from Hill City Dresden Atwood and Goodland. The Weather Bureau warned of possible scattered showers and storms in the west later tonight.
Lee Andrews, 18, former University of Kansas student, who killed his parents and sister in Walcott last November, began clinical examinations at Menninger Clinic in Topeka. He will be returned to Wyandotte County jail nightly as security. Defense contends temporary insanity.
Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic fatalities for the year 1959 total 270 as of nine a.m. today, with 270 deaths recorded to date and 244 for the comparable period in 1958.
