Drivers heed caution as Fourth of July toll tops 271 highway deaths

The Associated Press reports 271 highway deaths, 178 drownings, and 64 other fatalities over a 54 hour July 4 weekend. Despite more cars and longer travel, the toll was below pre holiday estimates. Kansas and Missouri saw multiple fatalities including a 10 year old boy in Edson, a pickup crash near Goodland, and a truck train collision near Nickerson.

Top Legionnaire Arrives for Visit

Preston Moore national commander of the American Legion arrives in Chanute Oklahoma from Stillwater in a private American Legion plane. He meets Chanute Legion officials and family then attends an informal meeting at John Nation’s home followed by dinner at the Drumstick and a nightly Legion meeting kickstarting a local membership drive. State and district officials plan to attend including Bill Haney Kenneth Young Hugh Smith Jr Irwin Cowger Glen Callow Emmett Carress Earl Biggerstaff. The Moores depart tomorrow morning.

One Non Collision Crash Reported Over Holiday Weekend

A single non collision crash occurred about 9 p m Saturday in Neosho County during the 4th of July weekend. Glen Henry Orth of Piqua stopped at a curb and Donald Lee Reed of Lola suffered rear and front panel damage to their vehicles a 1956 Dodge and a 1958 Chevrolet. Two minor accidents were reported in Chanute with no patrol reports filed. James D Fowler of Fredonia was arrested on D WI and reckless driving charges after a stop on US 169 south of Chanute. The county also reported thefts of 35 gallons of gasoline from a Dean Kepley tractor and two tractor batteries from Harry Brant. No fires were recorded by the fire department.

Kansan Dies in Montana Head On Crash Near Big Timber

A Kansas man identified as Daniel Thomas Griest, 55, of Cottonwood Falls was among three killed when a head on collision occurred about 12 miles west of Big Timber Montana. Also killed were Lucille Lohstretter, 50, and Alma Mae Nelson, 60, both residents of Billings.

$65 Stolen At Humboldt

A money bag with $65 cash was stolen from the Clark Lumber Co. safe in Humboldt during a weekend break in. Entry was gained by prying open a north door and the burglary was found when the yard reopened after the Independence Day holiday. Andy Bowman manages the yard.

Farm Boy Killed In Tractor Accident Near Junction City

Earl Keating aged 13 died Saturday in a tractor accident at his farm home about 12 miles northwest of Junction City. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Edward Keating.

Five Kansans Die in Crash

Five Caney residents died in a collision on U S 66 near Flagstaff when a car drifted across the center line and struck a truck trailer. Survivor is 2 year old Matthew Edwin White, injured critically. the car’s other occupants were Wanda White 23 and her children David Allen 6 Mark Andrew 4 and Sharon Elaine 7 months. Truck driver DeWayne Ship of Flagstaff was uninjured. second car’s driver unnamed escaped injury.

Truth and influence allegations shake Kansas politics

Republican state chairman Sam Mellinger urged that the people deserve to know if Gov Docking his son or associates sought improper influence on the Corporation Commission. He urged Beatty to name names places and dates under oath to prove or refute the charges amid Docking’s denial and Beatty’s resignation.

Shooting Fatal to One in Lola Kansas

Elmer E. Norman a 72 year old retired farmer was killed in a shooting at his Lola Kansas home. His wife 67 was wounded with superficial injuries and a head laceration. Police report she awakened to find Norman over her saying he would shoot her. after a struggle she escaped and was struck by a second shot.

Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic fatalities during the July 4 holiday period total five. Year to date deaths reach 270, compared with 241 for the same period in 1958.

Murder Charge Filed After Stabbing Here York Held in Custody

Howard York faces a first degree murder charge for the fatal stabbing of his roommate Caldwell Culton at the Chicken Shack cafe in Chanute. The 28 year old York was arrested at the scene after witnesses said the two men fought over a damaged car fender. Culton, 36, died from a stab wound to the jugular vein. York claims the knife belonged to neither man and says it was found in a car they bought. Preliminary hearing set for 3 p.m. York, a North Carolina native, had been living with Culton since arriving for a carnival engagement. The investigation involved Chanute police, the sheriff, highway patrol, and a Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent.

Thousands Attend Chanute Fourth of July Celebrations

The Chanute VFW event drew an estimated 9 000 spectators with 3 000 to 4 000 at the afternoon show and 4 000 to 5 000 at night. V W Holman won a 1959 Edsel, others received $15 gift certificates. Claude Gosney won fast draw with a 13 of a second time. Fireworks and a buffet dinner followed at local venues. Santa Fe Lake and other outdoor spots were popular.

Damaging Winds Hit Hays Area In Kansas Outbreak

A violent weather outbreak struck western central Kansas with damaging winds up to 100 mph in the Hays region. The storm produced 1.40 inches of rain and hail, breaking windows and felling trees as it spread from Conway Springs to Norton.

Patrol Nabs Liquor Load Near Chanute

An undetermined amount of liquor was seized from a car driven by Karol T. Clodfelter, 45, of Tulsa, south of Chanute at about 9 15 this morning. Trooper RL White said an inventory would be done this afternoon and Clodfelter jailed on illegal transportation charges.
